Deciding what to do as a career

I’m stuck on whether to major in cs or do something in business such as BAM(Business Administration), or marketing. I just wanna know what career you can get out of business administration or marketing after college and like what will you do in that field mostly every day. I guess the questions that I want to be answered are.

  1. Similarities and differences between business administration and marketing
  2. What is your daily life like as in marketing or business administration is it semi boring and sometimes enjoyable?
  3. Which major between the two can get you a job a lot faster between the two

A few comments:

  1. Unless you are a junior in college or are applying to colleges that accept by major there is no reason to decide now. Go to b-school, take the business core curriculum (including intro classes in things like accounting, finance, marketing, statistics, management, IT etc.) and you will get a better idea of what is involved in the various disciplines and where your interests and aptitudes lie.
  2. Business administration is a very general degree is is typically one of the least employable business majors. If you major in marketing I would suggest that it should be paired with business analytics, statistics, or something along those lines if you want to be readily employable.
  3. Once you are in college (or now if you are in college) you can talk to people in career services to get a sense of where graduates with the two majors you are considering from your college end up interviewing/working. Take advantage of their knowledge when choosing a major.
  4. Any job in the world can be "semi-boring" -- that is why they call it work.

Is it that you’re unsure that you like CS? Could you major in CS and minor in a business-related area such as marketing or analytics?

Are you a high school or college student?

currently, a freshman in college and I am unsure on what to do I would like to do cs, and minor in a business-related area or if I don’t find it enjoyable I can get into marketing. I’m just trying to find a career that I’ll enjoy for the lifetime and not have to regret what I did

If I do pursue marketing what can you do as a marketer do you just use excel 24/7? That is the reason why I am very uninterested in accounting I know someone who works from accounting, and she’s very successful at it got out of college with a job making good pay but her day to day basis is something I’m uninterested in.

OP - I seriously don’t mean this with any disrespect…but regardless of what you do, you need to work on your writing skills. I’m not sure if you’re treating this like texting (quickly, no grammar, etc) or if english is not your native language (I suspect this to be the case) but your comments are hard to follow.

That said, CS and Marketing are vastly different and require very different skills. Ironically, Marketing will require very good communication skills (written and spoken). Within Marketing there is a wide spectrum of jobs and functions. Are you interested in, A. Big data / analytics and using that to drive eyeballs, or B. Stocking promotional products on end caps at the local retailer? Both examples of marketing. Lots of stops in between. The Pepsico’s and P&Gs of the world have vast careers in Brand Management which all start with Marketing.

CS is a whole different world but is connected in the modern workplace as it provides the data (tools) for Marketing and other functions. CS typically requires a pretty strong math background. Do you have that? Something you might consider is a blend of math and business. Don’t know anything about your school but Interdisciplinary Programs combining CS / Math with Business are popping up at several schools. Maybe there’s a way to combine that at your school.

yea, sorry about that I have like ADHD and sometimes I just don’t think about what I write down, and I guess I’ll take some introductory business classes and see whether or not I like it. If I do decide to go on marketing, what should I combine with it that’ll make me qualified or more stand out than others.

No one here knows you. So can’t recommend what you would like to do. Go to your advisor next week. Have a sit down and discuss. That’s what they are there for. Go to the career center at school. Discuss with them. Then make some appointments with professors even just their open hours. Discuss with them. Again, they are all there to help you. They get these questions daily. You won’t be the first one to ask them. Educate yourself then let us know what you found out

Virtually all business degrees in UG will require you to take an assortment of business classes and a concentration in a particular area. You will take accounting, finance, marketing, stats, econ, computer IT, management, etc.

Take some and see what you like. Some get to accounting and say no thanks. others take it and say more please. You won’t know, and no one can really tell you, until you try it.
