Major: Strategic Communications
I was admitted to:
Baylor University (too expensive)
Miami University Ohio (not my personality)
Ohio University (Scripps school is perfect for my major)
Texas A&M (ran out of housing)
and
University of Texas CAP Program (UTSA would be my chosen school)

My decision is mainly between OU and UTSA.
The pros and cons I see for each:
OU pros
-Scripps
-College town
-closer to my mom
-awesome music festivals, etc.

OU cons
-seen as a party school
-not much prestige as a school
-weather
-location (Athens, Ohio)

UTSA pros
-San Antonio
-weather
-music scene
-closer to my dad
-new, adventure
-guaranteed admission to my dream school sophomore year (University of Texas)

UTSA cons
-far away from mom, current friends
-commuter school
-would be transferring out after a year

I know where you’re coming from because I know I might be in the same boat in a year or so. I’m planning on applying to my dream school and if I don’t get in I have to decide whether I want to go to a state school and transfer sophomore year or stay permanently somewhere else.

I guess I could use some advice on that too for when the time comes (which hopefully it doesn’t) but where I’m at right now, I’m thinking that if I don’t get in, I don’t know if I will want to be spending my entire first year of college at some place that I know I don’t really want to be. I wouldn’t want to be there knowing I don’t plan on staying and then either getting attached to people or spending a year not truly socializing and getting the true college experience. I know it’s only one year but for it being my first year of college, it’s a pretty big deal and I personally don’t know if I want to start off on a not so great note.

Another thing, and I don’t know if it will apply to you because this is just my personal view on life and kind of reflects my faith, but if I don’t make it in, I’m wondering if there is a reason for that. I’ve worked my ass off these past years of high school and I don’t think there was anymore I could have done at this point. So I’m thinking that if I don’t make it in, maybe there’s a reason for that. Maybe that’s not where I’m meant to be, and there’s actually a better opportunity for me somewhere else.

I don’t know if any of this is applicable to you but I hope it helps!

I disagree with the above. Texas A&M is far better ranked, and has a much better overall reputation than miami university.
The OP must be in state in Texas, and with UT’s highly reputed communications school, it seems imprudent to pay out of state tuition costs in this scenario.
Lots of people who go to UTSA for their freshman year end up cap-ing to UT. Don’t pick a school based on proximity to high school friends. This is a new phase in your life and you have a chance to make plenty of new friends.

Are you in-state for both of your options because of where your parents live? If not, which of these is in-state for you? Cost should be part of your consideration.

If you are fixed on a particular major, the overall reputation of the institution matters much less than the specific reputation of your department, and the success of students who come out of that department. Contact the departments and the career centers on each campus, and ask where their grads end up.

Every big state U is considered a party school by the kids from that state. Your behavior once you are in college willdetermine whether or not it is a party school for you. If you think you won’t be able to stay out of trouble, then the wisest option may be to take a year off andl let yourself grow up a bit more before moving onto a college campus. Nothing wrong at all with taking a Gap Year.

I couldn’t help but notice you listed as a pro for OU that you are closer to your mom, and as a con for UTSA that you would be far away from your mom. You did not list being far away from your dad as a con for OU. Maybe you would rather be closer to your mom? That’s not a bad thing! ;)

My nephew is also having to decide between UTSA (CAP) and an out-of-state school. One question for you: Have you looked into how selective your major is at UT-Austin? Will you get into it for sure? As you probably know, just because you’re guaranteed admittance to UT-Austin does not mean they will give you your first choice of major automatically.

Yes, I receive in state tuition in both states due to my parents being divorced, therefore cost is balanced between the options. I grew up in Oxford and I know that Miami is simply not the place for me. Thank you for your opinions everyone, if you have any more I’d love to hear them!
