first let me say, i just finished my freshman year in college so i have plenty of time but i figured i would ask anyway.

right now i am double majoring in finance and accounting. my school is one of the top 80 business schools in the country and it has one of the best masters programs in the country.

their accounting program is 5 years long to satisfy the 150 credits and you get both a masters and bachelors.

i have the ability to graduate in 4 years given my high school-college credits.

so my question is, should i stay 5 years and get the masters or stay 4, get the bachelors and see if the future allows or requires me to get a MBA?

thanks.

You don’t want to graduate in four years unless you have the 150 credits, as not having them will eliminate you from hiring consideration by a lot of firms. I wouldn’t want to leave school and its oncampus recruiting without a job, even if I had 150 credits. Without a job offer, I would stay the extra year and get the master’s.

It is a little redundant to get a masters and and an MBA, so I would try hard to get a job with the bachelors and 150 credits. Then do the MBA later.

If you’re going into accounting, stay the extra year.

Agreed to stay the 5th year and ensure the 150 credits through the masters. Some CPA reqs are changing by 2014 to include specific subject credits in that 150. Not all the extra credits to qualify for the CPA exams will be allowed from the same subject, so I think that’s what the extra year for masters at your school is meant to help dissect. I know CPA isn’t your goal, the MBA is, but recruiting for an accounting position will be greatly increased if you already meet the credit req to sit for your exams. Then, if it’s in the cards and you’re still interested, end up going for the MBA.

well first, sorry i didn’t mention this before.

i would be able to graduate in 4 years WITH the 150 credits.

I will take 36 credits per year and i have 9 credits from high school.

36x4= 144
144+9=153 credits.

so it will be possible for me to get the 150 in 4.

does that change anyone’s opinion or should i still go the 5 year?

thanks for the responses!

If you can make 150 credits in 4 years, wouldn’t you get the Masters as well?
