Decision Made: I chose Rice Because:

D made the decision based upon:

Trustee Distinguished Scholarship

Century Scholars scholarship and research program

Endowment per student and overall resources of a major scientific research universtiy but in a LAC package with LAC foundation

Adjacent medical center resources

Prof per student ratio

Clean, upscale City ranked #1 with lots of things to do and plenty of transportation options.

Quality of life/Academic Standing combination

Rising star and rankings factor- a place and city that is on the rise

The above tipped the scale over, in the order presented:

Dartmouth (great place and brother attends there)

Stanford

Princeton

Cornell

Brown

Duke

Williams

Amherst

Middlebury

Pomona

Vanderbilt

Northwestern

Haverford

Georgetown

Vassar

Good luck future Owl’s!

Did you get into all of those schools and chose Rice?

Anyway, congrats! You’ve made a good decision. =]

Yin wei mi fan da xue you hao chi you hao xiang.

Jajajaja, an admissions officer would shoot me for this : P

^Translate? I understood mi fan…

“because rice university is tasty and delicious/fragrant”

main reason is that Houston is closer to Colorado.

wow those are a lot of schools your daughter rejected for Rice…

Oldcard-- I am glad to see your post. Congrats to your daughter on her acceptances and also on making a decision! I recently bumped an old post of yours to find out if a decision had been made. My son (also Trustee Distinguished and Century Scholarships) is still on the fence and a few of the schools he is considering are on your daughter’s list (Stanford, Duke, plus a few Texas schools with a full ride or close to it). I’m going to show your daughter’s lists of reasons to my son. Maybe it will help him get off that fence! We’re running out of time…

CPQ-- we love Dartmouth of the Ivies and they showed love with a likely letter prior to RD. We told her to forget the money, but the double scholarship shows a welcoming open arm and the reserch opportunity proved to be a better fit for her than the others. Smaller than Stanford but with as much or greater resources and more LOC in feel. Also, the wow of Princeton wears off the more you visit. We have visited most of the schools on the list. Bottom line, she felt it was the best fit for her- she is a science/math person and her brother, at Dartmouth, is more of an economics/law school path person but also was recruited there for sports. From this Dad’s perspective, we are not unhappy since we don’t qualify for aid anywhere and Rice has proven to be a jewel! I felt the same way for my son about Dartmouth after he had many choices-- its all about the fit!

Wow. Your daughter turned down incredible schools for Rice. I’m impressed.

Turning down top schools isn’t uncommon at Rice…
Added up, my son’s suite rejected offers from Yale, Swarthmore
Northwestern, Duke, Cambridge, and London School of Economics.
They have friends who chose Stanford over Rice – no regrets at all.

The best part is each one of them had a wonderful, challenging, memorable freshman year – got to know lots of great places to eat in Rice Village, walked to museums, enjoyed free concerts, and forged terrific ties with fellow students and wonderful professors.

Actually, I meant to say that they chose Rice over Stanford, or they wouldn’t be Rice friends!

A million years ago, Dd applied to 7 LACs and Rice. Got into all and turned down the LACs for Rice and ended up with the best of both worlds (since Rice is like a LAC and research U). Not ivies, but she didn’t apply to ivies. Turned down Bowdoin, Carleton, Oberlin, etc.

Just a question for the OP. Would your daughter still have chosen Rice without the two scholarships? Because I didn’t get either one, but I also got into Stanford, so I’m basically wondering if there are any Rice students who chose Rice over Stanford without the scholarships and with similar costs and who didn’t have an outside reason to pick Rice (like a sibling or GF there). I haven’t visited either, but I have fallen in love with Rice just by reading these posts. I want to be able to tell my parents that I’m not crazy for thinking of turning down Stanford.

Wow i’m so happy for all of you.

Would any of you turn down in-state tuition at UCB for Rice full price though?

^If your family could easily afford the extra price, and you like Rice significantly better, I would turn down UCB for Rice.

I’ve never visited Rice though, so I don’t know about the “liking Rice significantly better” part. From what I hear–the friendly environment, better pre-med in general–sounds great. But this decision is still really hard.

Can you visit? If not, I would personally never choose a school without visiting.

I can’t visit :frowning: I spent my spring break visiting Cornell, and I still don’t even know about Cornell yet.

I can decide one day before May1st right?

You can visit next weekend.
