okay...i'm going to be a senior this fall...so i gotta make up my mind on colleges right now but so far, i hv been indecisive...this is my dilemma...

first of all...i want to go premed in college with the hopes of going to a prestigious medical school (Duke, JHU, WashU (i'm dreaming BIG i know))...so this is the deal...my dad works at NYU...thus if i go there...i would get a free ride...this way, i'll save a whole bunch of money...

i'll also be applying to schools like yale, duke, wustl, harvard?, columbia, u chicago, tufts...so say like i got in to sum of these schools...Should i go then? i hv been hearing all these ppl saying things like how undergrad doesn't matter but is this REALLY true??? cuz these schools put much more kids into better med schools than nyu...

In either case, i'll still be working my ass off...will it really be easier for me to get a higher rank at NYU than at those other schools? and if so...how much will this actually help me for med school? thanks!

The best undergrad is the one you will be most comfortable with. If you don't wan't to be overworked, don't go to a challenging school. If you fare well when everyone around you are intelligent creating more pressure to succeed, then a competitive school would be great. Also, the advising system, facilities (for research), quality of teaching, professor contact etc... are to be taken into account. These could be important to your premed experience.

When the actual decision time comes -- that is, when you actually have to pick a school -- we'll discuss it then.

Prove it.

I graduated from NYU this May, and I'm headed to medical school this fall. I have classmates headed to Harvard, Columbia, and Duke. I doubt "yale, duke, wustl, harvard?, columbia, u chicago, tufts" do a lot better than that.

I personally think NYU is a great school. However, it's not for everyone - only self-motivated and mature students need attend. NYU is not known for its handholding, so students really have to get out there and beat through the brush themselves.

I would go to NYU. Its a free ride! That saves you over $100,000 over 4 years! And acceptance into med school is what YOU make it...not what statistics of the school make it. If you work hard, study hard, stay involved, and have good MCAT scores, you should make it no matter what school you go to.

Until the OP has an actual choice to make, this thread is moot.

okay so i dug up this thread again...i think its decision time, regarding where i'm going to apply ED, Regular...from what my guidance adviser told me, based on my schools stats of kids who got into NYU CAS, my stats almost guarantee (95% unless sumthing gets screwed up, and 70% into its Honors Program) me admission...I really however also kinda wanna apply to WashU, Duke, and Columbia, I would have around a 40-50% shot at WUSTL, a 20-30% shot at Duke, and ~20% shot at Columbia...what do u guys think?...should i apply early to NYU and just get it over with or should I try go for Columbia ED? which is truly a better deal for me? is it true that NYU's premed program is just as good as WUSTL, Duke or Columbia's? if that is the case...then i would go NYU ED without a doubt...if NOT, how much 'worse' is NYU's premed...i mean if its not that much of a difference, then i would still go to NYU...right? thanks in advance!

You should go to the school you feel most comfortable at. DO NOT choose schools based on how you think they will impact admission to medical school. If undergrad does matter (and I tend to think that it's impact is very minimal) it doesn't matter enough that it should make you go to a school that you don't love.

okay...yea i hv been thinking about that...i REALLY want an atmosphere that isn't all THAT competitive, but competitive to give me incentive to work hard and push myself...are the kids at like top schools, ie duke/columbia really really competitive and overachieving? thanks!

Duke kids certainly are very cooperative and pretty genial.

You are still basing too much of your decision on questions like "which one's the better premed school" or "which one am I going to get a better GPA at." Honestly, you should be asking questions like "which one do I fit in better at" and "where would I feel most at home." If you're unhappy at a place, you're not going to do well as a premed.

okay...how different is columbia from nyu? are the kids there more over achieving academically?

thanks for all the input! much appreciated

As an graduate of NYU's CAS and now attending medical school...

Look, you're going about this all wrong. None of us can tell you "how different College XX is from University of Z" because it really depends on you. It's ridiculous to ask whether NYU kids or Columbia kids are more hardcore because frankly, at that level, the differences are miniscule. What do you want in a school? What will make you happy? It's a lot easier to do well in a school that you like, and this in turn will make it easier to get into medical school.

I suspect that I would've been pretty happy at CMU or UDelaware, too - maybe not quite as happy as I was at NYU, but it would've been so darn close that I doubt I could sensibly articulate what exactly I would've liked more. Your reactions to NYU, Columbia, Duke, blahblahblah are not going to be the same as mine or BDM.

Visit the schools and then apply. Alternatively, see which schools you get into and then visit. Don't keep asking us CCers to keep comparing schools for you. You're wasting your time and our time because you aren't going to get the definitive answers you seem to be looking for.
