My S has been accepted to four schools - James Madison, Hampden-Sydney, Randolph-Macon, and Bridgewater. Still has appliacations pending at Virginia Tech, William and Mary, and Old Dominion. He is being recruited for football by Hampden-Sydney, Randolph-Macon, and Bridgewater. Thoughts, advice on any of these schools.

Other than the fact that they are all in Virginia, you’ve got schools all over the map–public/private, big/small, highly selective/not so selective. Has your son visited all of these schools? Have you done financial calculations? If playing football is important to your son, he should focus on those schools that would give him the opportunity. A Division I school like Virginia Tech is quite different.

Has your son visited any of these schools?

Would playing football make it hard for him to complete his degee (if it’s a difficult degree)?

He has visited the schools. I think he can do both football and pre-med. I think it will between Hampden-Sydney, Randoplh-Macon and James Madison.

I still think this is an unusual set of schools. Hampden-Sydney is all male with 1122 students. Randolph-Macon is coed but has 1152 students, 54% female. JMU is public, 60% female, and has 15,651 students. The atmosphere of each is likely to be extremely different from each other.

Are they all affordable?

JMU is the cheapest. He received merit scholarships at both Macon and Hampden Sydney. Hampden and Macon will be a bit of a stretch financially. Although Hampden is all male, because on the weekends it is definitely coed. I think he would get a better education at the small schools but it is his choice. I am just trying to help make an informed decision.
