Generally speaking, a great many colleges do indeed send acceptances in big packages and rejections in a small envelope but this is not consistent among colleges. I can only tell you that my own kid got an acceptance to Ithaca (in a prior year) in a small envelope. She got an academic acceptance but deferal for a BFA program in a big envelope and so that was a bit deceiving. So, ya never know in either direction.

MusicTTXmom-- when did your D audition? I auditioned at Chicago unifieds and I have yet to hear. I am beginning to get very impatient!

But good luck in opening the letter! I hope it's good news!

First thin letter arrived today, any advise for a mother in waiting for her D to arrive home to open it?

musicislife

She auditioned in late November at the Texas Thespian Festival. Plus she was asked to send in a video because the head of the dept was not at the audition. Sent her video in late January. Thanks and Good Luck to you!

Any acceptances or rejections this week? We still have received anything . . . . I was hoping there might be something in the mail today.

My d’s thin envelope was a rejection…Good luck to all still waiting!

I got a thin envelope as well and it was a rejection too.

Good luck everyone!

I’m assuming it’s probably not a good sign to have not heard any positive news as it gets later into April. I mean… would they notify you of an acceptance if you only had 2.5 weeks to make the May 1st deadline? :

The person who posted from Singapore: can you email or call the school?

Yup, I intend to follow up on Ithaca and Syracuse tomorrow, because of the time difference.

Well, I never received a letter in the post, so I phoned admissions about an hour ago. Unfortunately, I’ve been denied a place in the fall semester. Ah, well.

Congratulations to all those accepted! :)

Hi Soozievt,
I have been reading the MT forums per your advice. Thanks again. I read in the Ithaca section that your daughter got in at Ithaca, which is one of my daughter’s choices. Can you give me advice re/audition process and your D selection of songs and monologues? How does she likes the school? My D is there right now for a 3 weks MT program, but they were very clear that it won’t make any difference in her audition process.

While my daughter was admitted to Ithaca for a BFA in MT, she chose to attend NYU/Tisch where she just graduated from in May. I have been to Ithaca for the audition.

I prefer not to list my D’s songs and monologues per her privacy but I truly don’t believe it would help you at all anyway. One’s songs and monologues must match each person’s strengths. What someone else sings or performs may not fit the next person, let alone you don’t want to do what everyone else is doing anyway. Also, what she used was not specific to her Ithaca audition and was material she used at several college auditions. Ithaca was the first school she got into but she got into quite a few others as well. I agree that attending the summer program at Ithaca will have no bearing on getting in for the BFA. I suppose if any of the faculty in the summer program are involved in the BFA auditions (I don’t know that to be true…have no idea), then it can never hurt that they are familiar with her. But otherwise, it is not really a hook to getting admitted there. In any case, Ithaca is a fine program and very well regarded, but also very hard to get into. Several students from our region have gone there. The best girl from our HS this year who just graduated is heading there, I believe, but did not get in for MT (wanted MT) but for Acting. My D has a friend from our region who just graduated for Acting but had wanted MT, but still did a bunch of MT while he was at Ithaca. He liked it a lot. When you audition at Ithaca, you can put on the audition form if you wish to be considered for both MT and Acting or just MT. My D only wanted MT and so put that. But if you put you would accept either, and there is either no room in MT or they don’t want to accept you for MT, you still have a chance if you get in for Acting. As you can see, I just mentioned two MT kids who didn’t get in for MT but attended for Acting instead and were open to that option.

Ithaca was not a fave of my D’s. The location and setting did not thrill her and the levels of dance and amount of dance were not ideal for her (she is a lifelong dancer). She definitely liked it enough to apply and was thrilled at the first acceptance and the scholarship she was awarded. Picking a college is about the right fit for each person. I know nothing about your D. She needs an appropriate list and a balanced list.

As far as advice regarding the audition process…there is so much on the MT Forum if you search threads a bout the audition process. If you have a specific question, I can try to answer it. Try to spend a few days culling the many threads on the general MT Forum and also using the search function for various topics. You will learn a great deal and then likely develop specific questions. The more specific the question, rather than general “advice”, the easier it is for people to reply.

Soozievt,
Again, thank you! NYU and Julliard are her top choices. I will keep reading and praying…I appreciate your time.

Please don’t hesitate to start threads with some questions. I was simply suggesting to read up the zillions of threads on the MT forum to get the skinny and then start threads with some specific questions you have. So much is covered here. Also, the search function can help you find threads on certain topics. Did you also notice the featured thread at the top of the MT Forum about Preparing to Apply - Classes of 2009 and 2010? Lots of helpful “starter” advice there too.

I am pretty sure you must know that Juilliard does not offer MT, just Acting. It is also a very very very long shot lottery ticket (I would say this to anyone, including the most talented young actors ever)…they accept about 1-2% and even then, take very few straight out of HS and so the odds are so long that your D should create a college list as if Juilliard is not one of the options in her mind (but try for it anyway if she likes it). But if your D is willing to study Acting, then when she applies to Ithaca, she should stipulate that she is willing to be considered for either MT or Acting which increases her chances of going there if they like her.

Again, I know nothing about your D but please be aware that Ithaca, Juilliard, and NYU/Tisch are some of the hardest programs to get into and so even if she has what it takes, the acceptance rates are so low that she needs to balance the top schools with some other ones as well. You mention on another CC thread that your D’s SAT Math score was low but what one person thinks is low, another thinks is high and so I have no clue how low you meant. But NYU is challenging/selective to get into academically, much more so than Ithaca, as well as NYU counts academics 50% of the admissions decision, more so than many BFA programs do. Make sure to put her test scores up in comparison to those of admitted students to each school and that she be within range.
