Decisions are out!!

Congratulations to all the accepted students.

Obviously the competition for admission was much tougher this year. Upon review, for the class year 2006-2007, RPI had 6,875 applications. When you look at the RPI website, there was a news notice indicating that on January 23 of this year, they already had over 12,000 applications and hadn't even finished the final count yet (RPI: News & Events - At Rensselaer, Freshman Applications Surge Past 12,000 for First Time in History).

Posting this for my sister...

*Decision: ACCEPTED *

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT I (by section): 2210 (V: 690, M: 750, W: 770)
[] SAT IIs: Math I-750, Math II-770, Biology E-680
[] ACT: 35 (V: 34, W: 34, M: 36, S: 36)
[] APs: US History (10, 4), BC Calculus (11, 5), Biology (11, 5), Chemistry (11, 5), Statistics (12), Physics C (12), English Literature (12), Spanish Literature (12), European History (12)
[] IBs: none
[] GPA: ~3.95/4.0 unweighted, 4.42/4.5 weighted
[] Rank: 1 out of 55, however, her school doesn't formally rank its students so this probably wasn't included in her application.
[] Other stats: She's a year accelerated in math and is taking Multivariable Calculus this year.

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] ECs listed on app: orchestra (11-12: first flute 12), school musical accompanist (8-12: piano 10, flute 8-9 & 11-12), varsity field hockey (9-12: captain 12), school newspaper (9-12: opinions editor 11, managing editor 12), math team (9-12), Model UN (9-10), piano & flute lessons (3-12 & 7-12)
[] Job/Work Experience: summer school math teacher & teacher's aid (12), biofuel research assistant with a school science teacher (11), library bookstore volunteer (10)
[] Essays (subject and responses): She submitted the Renssalaer Medalist priority application, so I don't think she had any extra essays she had to write. Her common application essay was about the first time she really felt a passion for music (an impromptu piano performance in a bar in Zurich, Switzerland at age 10)
[] Teacher Recs: both were quite strong. One was written by a math teacher who has taught her for four classes and had her as an advisee throughout high school. The other was her Spanish teacher whose had her for two years and who is known as an excellent college recommendation writer (he went to Yale and has taught courses there).
[] Counselor Rec: should have been solid. She's a bit of a "phenom" in her high school and I think he may have focused on that. It was probably a bit impersonal, however.
[] Applied on: right around the deadline... I'm not sure of the actual date.
[] Hook (if any): she submitted a cd of her flute performance. She's also a Renssalaer Medalist (other awards include AP scholar with distinction, Cum Laude, Bausch & Lomb, and National Merit Finalist)
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: southern CT (very competitive area for colleges)
[] School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): small private with a few Ivies and a handful of top LACs a year. Most students go to mid-tier LACs and universities.
[] Ethnicity: white
[li] Gender: female[/li][/ul]**General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Congrats everyone! After a rejection from MIT this afternoon, this was a very reassuring result :)

[] Job/Work Experience: Sears Hardware: cashier – summer ‘08, Ski Coach – winter ’08-‘09
[] Essays (subject and responses): Applied using common ap not the RPI application. Essay about my encounter with a mako shark while saltwater fishing and how it lead to my interest in the biotechnical/biomedical sciences.
[] Teacher Recs: If the teachers expressed in writing what they stated orally, they should have been fantastic. One was head of the science dept who in 2008 awarded me top student across the sciences; AP Bio, AP Chem, Honors Physics, and Anatomy/Physiology. The other was my American lit teacher who emphasized not only for academics but contributions in the classroom. Both were demanding teachers whose respect was earned.
[] Counselor Rec: Assuming writing abilities, it should be excellent. This is based upon conversations w/ counselor and knowledge of outside input from additional teachers that was given to him to use. This occurred not only at the of transcript submission but he submitted and additional rec w/ additional input with the midyear report.

I see the list of wait-listed and rejected students and can not help but see that they are more qualified than I am, but I wish each and every one of them the very best of luck in their admission to RPI or another fantastic university.
This is special for me because it is the place where my deceased grandfather, who I idolized, went to school. This one is for you grandpa!!

ahh, I see so I start in January. So technically I am accepted in another perspective. Does this mean I have to graduate a semester later? Yet I'm still the Class of 2013 it says... I checked online, and they say generally I don't graduate later, but I'm not sure for RPI, does anyone have an idea how this works?

Priority waitlist...
SATs: 730 M, 670 V, 720 Writing.
Full IB Diploma. Good ECs, great recommendations. A little surprised...got in ED to Michigan engineering, Georgia Tech engineering, UNC Chapel Hill and a few others. Oh well.

Yay i got accepted
i'm in the same boat as everyone who got rejected by MIT this afternoon. I'm sure that you will find the perfect school for you and RPI may just be it.

I got accepted! I had the Rensselaer Medal haha...but unless another school suprises me with a good aid package, I will most likely be going

Posting for DS who is in rural South America.

Surprised at how incredibly competitive RPI seems to be this year. I'm glad he was a Medalist because I always supposed they accept all their medalists.

Accepted with merit scholarship - 17k per year.

Was that in your email?

yea, was the merit stuff in your email?

What do you think this status means?

The Committee on Admissions has finished its review of your application for admission. At this time, we are offering a conditional acceptance to our Class of 2013.

Additional information indicating the details of the condition will be provided in the letter sent to you via postal mail.

Well that's a WTH if I've ever seen one.

Hopefully the conditions are good, though :).

I think conditional means that you are borderline and if your grades drop, then they have the right to change their mind?

BTW, I am IN, IN, IN! As I said someplace else, 18,500/year in merit, grants, and scholarships, plus another $12 in loans. Yes, it was a link at the bottom of the acceptance page. AND..... my SAT's weren't very good, but my GPA/Class/EC totally rock, so thankfully it isn't all about those %#)$ SAT tests.
