MY son is looking at MIT, Harvard, and Princeton for undergrad mechanical engineering. He is both a techie type and an arts (music, theater, creative writing) type. He would rather not take another history class for the rest of his life, but he is coming out of a small, artsy, nurturing highschool where he is a crucial member of just about every music ensemble. Opinions on which one to choose?

MIT is the obvious chioce because of the major. H and P and all the ivies for that matter do not have great engineering programs

He can cross register for courses at MIT if he attends Harvard…

or vice-versa

How does that work? How close are the two in distance and are all classes at either open to the other? How many kids cross register at MIT?

JMMom32: MIT and Harvard are just on other sides of the bridge about 10min ride away or 20-30 min walk depending on traffic

^^^ i meant opposite sides of the bridge

They are both in Cambridge and thus not across any bridge from each other. They are about 2 miles apart with Mass Ave. running between them.

Cross-registration is available to Harvard and MIT students beginning at the second-year of attendance at each institution.

Here are MIT’s reported guidelines for cross-enrollment: [MIT SHASS: Undergraduate Studies - Special Programs - Harvard/MIT Cross-Registration Program](http://shass.mit.edu/undergraduate/special/harvard)

Its a quick T ride (subway) between campuses. And now that Harvard has changed their academic schedule it is much easier to cross register.

^One can take the bus too. That might be even more expedient since MIT’s T stop is sort of far away while MIT’s bus stops are right next to the main building. I think it’s like two stops on the subway and 10-ish minutes on the bus.

MIT is “the” place for engineering. It seems he will be happier enrolling at MIT and taking classes at Harvard. The commute is easy. MIT has an amazing dept. of arts and media sciences. Congratulations !
