<p>I was told by some people that it would be a smart idea to select Mathematics as my major even though I want to be an engineer. They say with my high math scores/grades but relatively medium reading/English grades Id be more likely to be accepted under this major and switch when I get there. Is this a good idea or not?</p>
<p>depends where you're applying. At many large public U's engineering is incredibly difficult to transfer info from another major; this is true out west, for example, at the UC schools. You should check the specific schools you're considering.</p>

Perhaps on a website, but your most direct avenues would be to call the engineering dept directly and ask about it, or ask current students of the schools you're considering (on this board, thru friends, etc).</p>
