declaring a major when applying for undergraduate degree?

could someone please help!!! i understand that there are some schools which require you to declare which college you want to attend and what major you want to do, even when applying for undergraduate studies (eg. cornell??) but i thought undergraduate studies are supposed to be liberal arts programs, so what exactly is this all about?

also, can someone give me a rough idea of which are the schools that need you to declare majors when applying?

finally, if i declare a major in my freshman application, will i be able to switch if i find out i don't want to do it anymore?

thanks so much!!!

There are too many of them to name here. I suggest you check this fact out once you’ve decided on a list of colleges. Typically, the “you need to declare now” is for what are known ad popular and impacted majors (e.g. engineering), those for which special application or audition is required (art, music) or other popular programs that are small (film schools at some places.)

i know schools like cornell need you to declare a specific college as well as a major, and it doesn’t only apply to things like engineering and fine arts etc. if i want to do something like law or medicine, what major should i declare at undergraduate level? because these aren’t available. thanks for responding by the way. =)
