Decrease in a school grant

I was comparing financial aid packages with my roommates who has the same financial circumstances. I realized that he was getting more aid than I was. I realized that for one of the grants that we receive, he got 1500 for fall quarter in comparison to my 290. I then checked last years financial package that I received from the school and check the same grant. I received 1500 last year in comparison to the 290 i'm receiving this year. I was wondering if there anything I can do about this or a reason why i'm receiving less aid.

Contact your school’s financial aid office and ask them why?

Call your financial aid office on Monday morning. People on here can give you a lot of hypotheticals but no one can answer that question definitively.

As others have said, only the fin aid office can answer the question… However, most schools do not meet full need of all of their students. How they decide to give which students how much is their own business. They will often give students they want more, more money. Also those who apply earlier tend to get more. As funds get depleted, the helpings tend to be less. It’s not as though a school has a set formula treating each student equally. Doesn’t work that way. It’s a surprise when a school gives identical packages to students with the same financial info.

What grant are you talking about? If it is a Pell Grant, for example, this is entirely based on your EFC per FAFSA…and can easily change from year to year.

The question to need to find the answer to is why your grant was reduced. If it a Pell, or some other grant related to EFC, it is very possible that it was reduced because your EFC up. Ask your financial aid office for a clarification.

Re: your roommates “identical” financial situation…maybe and maybe not. It is very possible that there are financials, that are NOT identical between your roommate and you…and really at the end of the day, what your roommate gets is irrelevant to your own aid.

There is an “old saying”. Don’t count other people’s money!

When you received your award for this school year, that grant was already reduced. you knew that without comparing notes with your roommate. Ask your finaid office. They will be able to tell you why this is the case.

Unless you can show that your roommate has the same exact income from himself and parents, same ages of parents, same amount of money in the same exact type of assets, same number of people in household, same amount of cash under the mattress, etc, it is of no use to compare. You got what you got, and he got what he got. Period.

*I was comparing financial aid packages with my roommates who has the same financial circumstances. *

Your financial situations may not be exactly the same. Incomes may be similar, but household size may be different, or savings may be different, etc.
