Family. No Gmail in China. @ilovewhitman is right. I saw somewhere (I think on this fourm) they call. But that’s an issue since my phone doesn’t always work.
Oh no! Well, don’t worry… no word yet! What have you all been up to since submitting the DS app?
@ilovewhitman Trying to catch up in life because of unexpected occurrence? Bad british humor aside, trying to get the last IB CAS experiences (Grr…).
Oh… @DragonofChangban I can’t relate… we’re an AP school. What are “experiences” for IB CAS? Something to get you IB diploma?
@ilovewhitman IB’s CAS is basically community service where you need to fulfill 10 “experiences” (Creativity, action, service) and reflect on them. You can’t take money, it should (mostly) be more than a one time experience.
I’ve got seven right now. And it’s painful. Because it’s hard to find time between writing your internal assessments (IA) for your IB courses (20% of your IB grade), college apps, and semester exams. I’m also reallly far behind due to family issues and what not so LOL. I’m like a month and a half behind on one course (and IB courses generally mean 1 missed day= 1 week missed in regular classes).
It’s a really, really bad position for me to be in right now. But I do what I can. Obviously, the attack on my health has left me wounded, and disfigured, but it has never left me stronger! (Bad Star Wars jokes aside…) Enough complaining about my life now. On a more serious note, I want to ask something.
- To the impression of the learning by doing for Deep Springs, it reminds me of Scouting. In addition, I’ve always wondered if Deep Springs is considered Liberal (Democrat) or conservative (Republican)?
I’d say that it’s neither (although it seems conservative on the surface) it holds traditional “leadership” values and also advocates something akin to the Cultural Revolution in China (the “intellectuals” being sent to work the fields to understanding life). It’s a liberal arts college that’s more “practical” than other LACs and doesn’t seem to have the social activism “issues” (for good or bad) like this:

I’m probably conservative leaning due to being from the south, but sometimes things like what happened above make me really hesitant to join a college like that. College is to study and to educate yourself with ideas that may be repulsive, foreign, and disturbing to yourself. It is not supposed to be an echo chamber.
Fascinating article… I really want to listen that podcast now! Do you guys follow any podcasts?
@DragonofChangban - IB CAS sounds hard. Best of luck getting caught up and sorry you fell sick…
Yeah, DS does seem kind of like scouting… were you ever a Girl/Boy Scout?
As for your political question, I’m not really sure which was Deep Springs leans. I think it is hard to tell. My guess is the same as you: neither. I like to hope that DS’ers (is that how you would say it?) can listen to each other and reach some sort of middle ground, staying out of the “echo chamber” you mentioned above.
@ilovewhitman Yes. I was a Cub and Boy Scout. Why do you ask?
Just curious if you had experience scouting or just the idea. I’m still scouting!
Oi! You a Eagle yet!? (I left after basic tenderfoot).
Actually… I’m a Girl Scout! And I haven’t gotten my Gold Award.
Oh I’m sorry, didn’t the gold award get changed?? (Or did BSA admit girls?)
Not sure…? I’m pretty sure the Gold Award is the GS equivalent of the Eagle Award.
I live in the SF Bay Area near two DS graduates who are both in their 30s or 40s. I was fortunate to speak to both of them and both said DS leans to the left but are very open to discussing different ideas. Also, given how much that class changes year to year, the leaning is probably subject to a lot of change.
@iliketoreadalot Thanks for the information!
@ilovewhitman Forgive me, I checked and it was that the Boy Scouts opened up to ladies joining? (It’s quite paradoxical to the name though).
If I remember correctly, they lost a lot of membership through the years cause
“scouting” is not as popular as it once was. At least where I live in Texas, seems to be comprised mostly of whites (with a smattering of Asian/ AA few and far in-between). In addition, we had quite a bit leaving due to the admission of transgender and homosexuals here (The LDS church broke with them, and I remember a lot, a lot of people not letting their kids join because of those decisions). Might be different from what happens in other states, but that’s why Circle Ten (North Texas/ Oklahoma) area lost most it’s members.
Could someone tell me what “Liberal” in the sense of California is? Their goals? I get the general idea of liberalism and I try to research about the trends in California but all I get are the “THEIR AFTER MY GUNS” stuff due to my location (Which ironically, caused quite a lot of tension in our election between large cities and the the rest of the state due to the relatively liberal Dallas-Austin-Houston cities to the rest ). So I’d probably understand better if someone told me specific nuances. In addition, I’m pretty sure Texas Democrats are considered Republicans in California due to the the conservative lean of the state.
Has anyone been able to access the Deep Springs site? Or was it just me that had it not loading?
I can’t access their web site either…
Now it is back up…
Does any one know when does the 1st round of application decisions come out?
I heard December 22… I’ve been counting down the days! It would make sense they’re trying to do it by December 22 because that sounds like the end of this term, according to the academic calendar on their website.
It also makes sense as in they want to root all those who are not that interested in DS. Other colleges like Notre Dame give out their decisions by Dec 15th.
@ilovewhitman
Are you studying for your final exam? I wonder if they want to see if people put DS on the back-burner and don’t return the phone calls.
