@dracollavenore I assumed I was the only international student here Is anyone else an international student? [-O<
@nightvale42 welcome >:D<
@CoffeeCreek I replied to your question about admission but it got flagged and taken down. 8-|
@Wildermind do you know why it was flagged? Can you ask the moderator to put it back up? On another note, where are you from? I know weāre supposed to be safe on the web and all but I donāt naming a country is that dangerous. I currently reside in China but Iām half British/Irish and spent the first twelve years of my life in Dubai.
@dracollavenore I have no clue I am from Africa, born and raised. O:-) What a coincidence, I watched a video on Irish mythology a few days ago insert dramatic music
@Wildermind I think you have a point. Most liberal arts colleges are dominated by women though, especially here in the U.S. Side note, where is everyone from? I live in nyc
@nightvale42 Only time will tell. The state of things in western societies makes me believe men will be phased out.
@Wildermind I donāt think thatās true. Men still have the upper hand in a lot of things. Also how would you phase out men? That would be pretty much impossible in terms of reproduction etc at least at our current levels. I think the balance might eventually swing towards women but it will eventually balance out.
@Wildermind ? when I read insert dramatic music I was expecting to hear something from Hall of the mountain king but instead my brain decided to play Fresh prince of Belair - I blame the one liner āI am from Africa, born and raised.ā It just sounds too similarā¦
@dracollavenore =))
@Wildermind @nightvale42 I think I watch a video not too long ago on how cultures try to adjust for past mistakes. The magic number is supposed to be three. E.g. when there are reforms/revolutions (Iām looking at France) things tend to shift way too much one way and then way too much the other before finally settling down. Itās almost fascinating how it mimics human balance on a tightrope but then again society is run by humans afterallā¦ To clarify, if it once was a very left wing government, a revolt might change it to very right wing and then another revolt will bring it back to the left until it finally settles down - think of it as a critically damped Newtonās Cradle if any of you are into physics.
@nightvale42 you should check out Jorden Peterson on utube, he explains it best. He says something about how the number of men in social sciences has drastically decreased. Men are being phased out by bringing up historical oppression and or lowering the standards for women.
The most obvious example is the film industry you see how women are not held to the same standards. For example Wonder Woman was okay, not terrible, yet it was hailed as one of the best films the year it came out.
As for historical oppression Black Panther yet again is okay. Maybe it is because the culture shown in the film I see everyday but I was not blown away, Infinity War is superior. Yet Black Panther got nominated for major film awards. 8-| An award nomination Nolanās Dark Knight Trilogy never got.
@Wildermind I think what youāre trying to express is what we call postive discrimination - overcompensating for past mistakes. I believe in the short run, overcompensation may occur but in the long run there will be an equilibrium balance.
@dracollavenore @nightvale42 Just like in Animal Farm. Wait. When has balance ever been achieved, in all of human history?
@Wildermind I just watched https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qsJfqnkPX58 and from the data Peterson expressed, ai want to say Iām in complete agreement but (youāll find out sooner or later that Iām quite stubborn) I never 100% agree with anything. My own input (not to be sexist) is that nature has shown the difference between men and women. Whilst there are plenty of exceptions - Amazonians - I strongly side with the biological approach where men tend to be leaders in more materliastic fields as opposed to interpersonal ones. I believe this is linked to the genes for motherhood and that whilst may be refuted, it can be seen almost everywhere. Women generally have better social connections, I have lived in five different cultures and can vouch for this, therefore are better in careers that have human interaction whilst men tend to fixate on objects and have a more direct approach. Then again, there are always exceptions and I wonder if LGBT have different biological wiring too. Perhaps gay men think more like women and lesbians being more hands on? I suppose it opens it up to further investigationā¦
@Wildermind when I say balance, Iām talking in a relative sense. You canāt ever have a universal balance in qualitative aspects due to the difference in human perception.
I have to say though, this chat has become a lot more fun than it was a couple of hours ago. Iām used to logging in every few hours to see if thereās been any update and coming away with nothing but this chat has really livened things up. Letās hope we can keep it up! ?
@Wildermind never, I think Derrida has some good writing on this in his later stuff when he talks about democracy to come, by which he means the democracy we are always heading towards but never reach. He theorizes that we might think we have reached democracy to come but we will be wrong and we should never be content with the democracy we have.
Also I liked black panther, itās better then plenty of movies that have gotten nominated. Same with superwoman, although it was worse then black panther. Movie awards are inherently subjective, and currently superhero movie remakes are in vogue. I donāt think society is going to far towards feminism yet, just that some fringe groups exist. Those ppl often are outside of the critical consensus of feminism even within the more extreme scholars.
@dracollavenore I totally agree, there are differences between men and women. Even when given choice women still go for motherly jobs. They dominate the medical and teaching fields whilst men stick to STEM and labor. There is a video about how two mathematicians created a formula that shows the difference between genders. To put it simply the university buried their careers, the same way WWE buried Daniel Bryan. Unlike Bryan they did not rise, like Jewish bread.
@Wildermind ? I understood everything you said up till the Jewish Breadā¦ Can you please expliain? ?
