@nightvale42 and @dracollavenore that will not be possible for me. Its unlikely I will be able to attend the interview in person, a lot is still uncertain.
@dracollavenore are they not supposed to respond to international students earlier because of study visa? They can take up to six months to come out.
@Wildermind :-/ That sucks… Let’s hope everything turns out okay in the end then. If we don’t meet at the interview then we’ll just have to meet during matriculation! :-bd
@Wildermind I’m not really sure about how visas work. Right now I’m just thinking about the second round. If I get in, I’ll ask about the visas but I suppose we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. They must know how it works, afterall, they’ve got international students there already. Perhaps a letter from Deep Springs may speed up the process…
@dracolleavenore @nightvale42 do you guys have other options?
@Wildermind I’ve kind of gone all in for Deep Springs but I plan on applying to Uchicago in January as a safety school. What about you?
@dracollavenore it complicated and messy but yeah I really wanted to apply to Hong Kong, CityU being my first choice, but I got a university in South Africa.
@Wildermind It seems you’ve got a pretty good selection there and I’m sure no matter how messy things are, everything will work out fine. I’m not overly religious but I do like to think everyone has got a sort of destiny with a lot of leeway but at the end of the day I know you’ll do great! :)>- Anyway… I got to sleep now so speak to you tomorrow!
@Wildermind I’ve applied to a bunch of other places and I’ve heard from 2 of them. I got in which is good at least. @dracollavenore Also that’s crazy UChicago is a safety for u, no one from my school gets in.
@nightvale42 :)) What are you interested in studying?
@Wildermind if I could chose freely and money wasn’t an issues philosophy. As money is an issue, enviormental engineering. Honestly deep springs is the only non engineering school I applied to but it’s my first choice
What about you?
@nightvale42 creative writing/ english/ film
@Wildermind that’s cool! Btw what time zone is it where u r? I’m In school rn but since all my classes are computer based it’s easy to chat
@nightvale42 It is seven pm
@Wildermind oh that makes sense
This was a pleasant discussion to come back to! A lot more colorful than before.
Not to bring something controversial back up (I think you all were handling it well) but I think the whole thing about women needing to return to the home and drop out of the workforce is sort of funny. What I mean is that for all of human history until the last fifty years work WAS in the home. Being at home was like managing a small business. Even male farmers were essentially working from home, as we will all learn first hand if we end up attending Deep Springs. And if you were a craftsman your shop was connected to your living quarters. There was very little distinction.
The tension between home and work, from my perspective, appears to have been created by exporting labor out of the home to factories, offices, and stores. Dorthy Sayers talked a bit about this, and I can support my claim with ancient documents, historical examples, etc. if needed, but I also think it speaks for itself.
(Also five minutes ago I got a phone call from an unknown number in Arizona and about lost my mind. It was just a mis-dial though, haha. Took me a while to get my heart rate back down.)
@celtqueen that’s really interesting! Makes me wonder if ppl honestly just want everyone to go back home to some degree. I think that could be supported by the rising trend in working from home and how ppl r struggling to achieve work life balance.
@celtqueen You almost gave me a heart attack =((
