Deep Springs 2022-2023 Discussion

Okay, the images didnā€™t upload in order but itā€™s close enough. Just read them from #4 ā†’ #1 ā†’ #2 ā†’ #3. Also thank you @_bospad for providing this :yum:

ā– ā– ā– ā– . Just found a typo on one of my essays.

You admitted to academic dishonesty in your essay? That seems risky.

Ah well thatā€™s a simple mistake. I donā€™t think Apcom is expecting you to be perfect, so you should be fine

Yeah, that semester wasnā€™t my proudest moment - I submitted the same essay for two different courses. But it was a pivotal moment in my life that taught me something important. Also, as you know, most people omit things that they feel will undermine their essays when itā€™s that exact point that normally gets people in. Weā€™re all human at the end of the day and DS is looking for that in our essays, not some perfect being who has got truths with a capital T. I personally believe that showing humility and myself at my worst is more authentic.

I mean, after all, thereā€™s no point trying to put up a front. Weā€™re going to be living in close quarters with each other for two years so they deserve to know the real me and not just the me that I like to show off. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Well, I wouldnā€™t advise other students to do it, honestly.

Hmmmā€¦ I see your point. I also have a friend who said that if you can achieve something without taking a risk, then there isnā€™t any necessity in taking that risk. I guess itā€™s really up to Apcom though, and since Apcom changes each year so none of us can be certain of what they really want. The best solution I could think of was being completely and unabashedly authentic, reflecting the best and worst parts of myself.

That being said, Iā€™m interested in how you answered the prompts. I think itā€™s great that since the application form is now closed, everyone is slowly coming together to share their own perspectives. If youā€™re willing to share how you interpreted the prompts and what method you used to answer them, Iā€™d love to hear it  But itā€™s up to you though - if you donā€™t currently feel like sharing then you donā€™t have to. I just wanted to express that your participation is appreciated

Iā€™m 59, ha. Long past college aps. UT-Austin was the only school I applied to because I knew I would get in with a scholarship. One of the best engineering schools in the country for $4/credit hour. Thatā€™s not a typo.

Sorry  I thought that you might have been another applicant. Itā€™s good to hear that you enjoyed your college experience and I wish I could be as proud of my current institute as you are of yours. But even though you may not be a fellow applicant, still - welcome to the thread :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: If you have any more advice, please feel free to share it! I may not necessarily agree with it, but Iā€™m sure someone else here will benefit from it. After all, some of the best educational moments crop up in the most unexpected places, and differing perspectives are always encouraged as they help everyone involved.

Hmmm, I was filling out college applications for other schools and I realized I forgot to add one activity to my supplemental document. I added enough activities, but this one was rather important to me and I think would have helped me to add. Iā€™m considering emailing apcom but I think that might make me look even more careless on top of the few typos I made on a couple essays.

Thatā€™s a tricky situation youā€™re inā€¦

The way I see it is that do you think that that one activity would really tip the scales in your favour? Like, if they were on the fence about your application, would adding that one activity secure your place in the second round? Or from another angle, do you think that leaving out that activity will mean you wonā€™t get invited to the second round?

I mean, Apcom is human just like the rest of us - Iā€™m sure theyā€™ll forgive your typo and be willing to accept any additional information if you email them. The thing is, that they have 300+ plus applicants and if you do send them something extra, then they will have to hunt down your specific application and connect the two. So, do you think that the extra information is worth the hassle that it will put Apcom through?

I mean, that activity could be really really essential. I donā€™t know what it is but since it is rather important to you, Iā€™m guessing that it might be worth it. Personally, when Iā€™m in situations like these, I flip a coin. Like, heads for email, tails for donā€™t. And letā€™s assume that it lands on tails. Itā€™s then that I have to assess my feelings. If Iā€™m relieved that it landed on tails then I simply wouldnā€™t email, but if Iā€™m feeling displeased with the outcome of the coin toss, then it means subconsciously I really did want to email and that I probably should. I donā€™t know if you would like to try to coin-toss-gut-feeling method, but thatā€™s sort of my two cents on the issue.

Hope that helps!

I ended up emailing them. If they see it and consider it, great. If not, itā€™s not the end of the world. I think it would strengthen my application and better reveal who I am, but not to the point where I think Iā€™m screwed if they donā€™t consider it.

Iā€™m glad you came to a decision :yum:

Just out of curiosity, did you use the coin-toss-gut-feeling method? If not, how did you come to decide?

No, I actually didnā€™t see your comment until after I emailed, but itā€™s a good tip. I decided the benefits of letting them know outweigh any potential negatives.
