Deep Springs

anybody here from, know of, or is interested in going to deep springs?

I know of Deep Springs. It's insanely difficult to get accepted. There's ~50 students & just a couple of profs. While you do get individualized attention & it's very well-respected, I really think students would learn more from a school w/ more students & faculty. That's just my $.02

You can find more informarion regarding Deep Springs @

It's a two year college, you can't get a B.A there. Of course, people go from there to Harvard, Yale etc.
Like someone said above, it's incredibly hard to get in as it is free of charge.
It's also all-male....
It's an "experience" for sure.

All students must promise to dedicate their lives to service, whether it be as a doctor, a fireman, or a pro-bono lawyer.

idk.. i get a feeling why everyone would be like iffy about going to the school, but it sounds really awesome.

I guess it's great if you like that sort of crap...

"it's incredibly hard to get in as it is free of charge"

I don't know if this is one of the bigger motivating factors for students, but maybe it is.

A friend of mine from my graduating class will be attending DSC next year. It truly is a unique school. There are 13-14 males per class and it is a two year school. The application process there is in portions and the current students do all the admissions as well. They work on a farm, choose their own classes, make their own meals, hire their own professors and work cohesively in order to survive.

It is not for everyone, but from what I have heard, it is an amazing place.

Haha http://www.deepsprings.edu/admissions/statistics.html

I love the captions to the pictures. This college has the highest yield that i've heard of (Over 90%).

Well one of the admissions requirements is 10 essays or something...I think only 1 person out of 14 accepted opted not to go

loool. 3.8% of the students are named alex

"3.8% of the student body have really cute polar bear hats which they wear sometimes"
"7.6% of the Student Body are (kinda, sorta) Quaker"
"3.8% are named Josh, but really named William"

-_-

I don't see what they are trying to prove. The statistics ARE true aren't they?
;)

Why would someone want to go to such a tiny school, when acceptees to go to an Ivie or top LAC?

Well, why would you anyone want to go to an ivy or a top LAC? People are different, and some would have a terrible time at an ivy, or a "top lac," or a caltech/mit like school, regardless of their intelligence and/or workethic. Plenty of people don't apply to any Ivy League school or Ivy League like school and do perfectly fine in life, living much happier than any Ivy or Ivy like school grad in the world. It's not that hard to understand, really. The kids that go to Deep Springs probalby don't have such a shallow materialism that demands they go to a brand name school and get a gorgeous diploma for all to see and know about. The kids that go to Deep Springs pledge to dedicate their lives to serving the public. Sure, this could be done at other schools, but they choose Deep Springs. I can understand that there, you have no choice but to interact with your mentors. This can even be somewhat avoided at those schools known for having small classes, besides maybe the Oxbridge style 1-2 student classes that Oxford, Cambridge, and Williams offer. Basically, the answer to your question is not everyone is looking for the same thing. I know it's hard for some people to believe, but the going to school xyz might be the worst possible thing for you, no matter what the general population thinks, the minority brand loving college crowd, or your friends think. It's more about the best place for you, even if it doesnt' have the name.

Deep Springs students literally select themselves. Not only are the admissions decisions made entirely from the current students, but by the time one finishes the admissions process and visits the place it's pretty obvious whether it's for you or not. If you want a place where the students don't say "hello" or "goodbye", where a bunch of guys get together into a room, turn off the lights, and start dancing to pop music, where the class offerings are extremely limited and depend on the whims of whatever professor wants to come out there, where the students are smart and not afraid to show it off except to people other than themselves, where any contact with civilization, even family, is strictly debated and questioned, where pushing yourself to your physical and mental limit is a requirement, where the sky stretches out for miles on either end, and where the students look strangely on any "outsider", perhaps Deep Springs is for you. It's an experience for those who truly want it. If you do, then you'll almost certainly get in. If not, then please don't put yourself through the process.

Is it true that they shoot you if you try to escape?

^loooool, i doubt that.
