How rare/common is it to receive mailings from DS?

Whats that place again? Is that one of those "legendary" hidden schools thats supposed 2 b better than harvard???

Not rare, but not common. In a word, uncommon. Learn about it, think about its mission and situation, and the 8 essay application. It's a very unique and challenging place, but not for many people. Although you might be one of them that it is for.

Whats so different about it?

http://www.deepsprings.edu/

Read about it. Some main points of interest are its small size, the fact that it is all male, the intense community in which one works on a farm and creates the rules of governance, the designing of coursework, and the intensity. Read, read, read.

Most of the people from the school end up transferring from Deep Springs to places like Harvard or wherever they want. One can only receive an AA from here, but they only let in about 12 of 500 applicants, and these are the kids that get into the top schools anyway. Oh yeah, they are chosen by the board of admissions, made up, I believe, by everyone at the school. Pretty much all decision are democratically made.

Again, read about it.

Wow thats kinda cool I was just on the website it seems very interesting...to bad I gave my final College list 2day...lol...there are alot of sorta unconventional schools like that im inding out:

New college of Florida
Deep Springs

what other ones?

If you're really interested, find out more and look into it. "Final lists" are artificial constructs.

St. Johns is an unconventional college, as is Marlboro. Many of the schools is Colleges That Change Lives are unconventional, too.

Ehhh it's weird. Make sure you want to be totally apart from society with a bunch of guys who are pretty arrogant/aloof and argue a lot. It sounds really interesting and unique, but it's not nearly as good as they make it sound on the website and in the brochure. A semi-utopia, it is not.

As far as getting mailings from it, you must be a male with a high SAT score. I think they limit sending it to the top 15,000 scorers in the nation or something.

If you're really interested, ask about visiting information. Many peoploe probably feel like vig180, while others feel like life wouldn't be the same without Deep Springs.

It definetly sounds interesting, that's for sure. But seriously, that is NOT the college life that I want.

Isn't it FREE?

I think so, but you should check the website.

Okay, I did it for you.

What's it cost to go to Deep Springs?
Every student accepted to Deep Springs receives a scholarship covering tuition, room, and board, and valued at over $50,000. Students need only pay for travel, books, and incidentals, which we estimate to be less than $2,800 per year.

http://deepsprings.edu/admissions/faq.html

In a word, yes, but you work and study your butt off for it!

Sweetness....but it is so secluded...

Well, I wouldn't exactly describe getting up at 5:30 to milk cows as free.

Such a school wouldn't be appealing to me. It feels like more of a club.

This place is some sorta communist "alternate teaching method"

Did you read the site at all? Almost everything that the community members do is democrat to the extreme.

As for alternate teaching method, well I won't argue with that. :)

I think it sounds amazing, not for me (besides the fact i'm female haha :p), but the kind of experience you won't find anywhere else.

^ Me too. I am applying there this year, partly for the writing experience, but mostly because I feel that the 2 years that I might wind up spending there would surely be amazing.

Good luck with that. If you go, you'll know that all those people can brag about their ivy league education all they want- you truly got a top, challenging, and unusual experience.
