Deerfield Academy [Deerfield, MA]

According to the Deerfield website the dress code or “Class Dress” must be worn by boys and girls in the following contexts:

-Classes
-Sit-down meals
-Traveling as a member of a team or group (unless in uniform)
-Academy events or functions
-Occasions designated by the Head of School or the Dean of Students

Class Dress – Girls
Girls’ class dress code requires two visible layers at the neckline; one of these two layers must be a blazer or sweater, and shoulders must not be exposed. Both layers must be worn, not carried. The only exception to the two-layer rule is for dresses with sleeves.

Other considerations:

Crew neck sweaters are allowed with or without collared shirts.
Dresses, skirts, and shorts must be of an appropriate length. (Skirts should be no higher above the knee than the width of the wearer’s hand, held flat as in a salute.)
Revealing necklines are not permitted, nor are exposed midriffs, shoulders, or backs.
Denim and jean material (no matter the color) are not allowed.
Hooded tops, athletic, and work clothing (including cargo-pants) are not permitted.
Fleece jackets may not substitute blazers or sweaters.

Class Dress – Boys
Boys’ class dress requires a sport coat, collared shirt, and tie OR a sport coat and turtleneck. Shorts may not be worn with a turtleneck. Shirts are to be tucked in. Facial hair is not permitted.

Other considerations:

In the winter term only, a sweater may replace a sport coat when worn with a collared dress shirt and a tie; sweaters may not replace a sport coat when wearing a turtleneck.
Denim and jean material (no matter the color) are not allowed within the dress code.
Hooded tops, athletic, and work clothing (including cargo-pants) are not permitted.
Fleece jackets may not substitute blazers or sweaters.

Hi! I’m a bit worried about applying for DA because I’ve read through this thread and it seems that I’m not really the type to get accepted. So many of you excel in certain areas such as sports and music, while I’m only strong academically. How and what should I put emphasis on to make myself seem less refusable to the people who make the decisions?

Some info on me:

My grades are generally A-range, with the rare B+ (I will be applying during the coming year to join as a sophomore, so I can still improve; I am about to start 9th grade as of right now). My GPA averages at about 3.90 for the past year, set on an annual A-F scale (no A+ or F- or cumulative GPAs). I am around #3 or #4 in the class, but it’s out of a class of only 75 people, which would put me in the top 5-10%.

Math is my main strength, as I am a year ahead by my school’s standards (I am set to take the 10th grade honors algebra II course next year). I am also strong in science, which is a class I really love, and I feel that I’m going to do particularly well in biology this coming year.

I have played harp for eight years and piano for one, but I don’t compete and I’m not particularly good, so I really don’t have anything to show for it. Unlike many of the applicants here, I’m not musically skilled (I can hardly sight read…)

I do ballet and rock climbing, but that’s it. I don’t play any competitive sports.

I am also a year ahead (This is again by my school’s standards, so I’m not sure how it compares to DA) in Spanish. I am set to take Spanish IV. My school does not offer Spanish V or VI.

My school focuses a LOT on leadership, so I am a good public speaker and I’m sure I’ll do well at the interview.

I write fiction and have competed in contests and sometimes place in the top five against adults and usually the top three against my age group. I have also had some poetry published, though not in one of the big books.

I can add more if I need to, but I’m just wondering how I compare to the average student at DA. I’m not worried about the interview. I’m only worried about how I look on paper. Does anyone know what DA’s primary focus is when looking at the applications? Math and science (That would be nice)? Public speaking and leadership? Charitable people?

What should I highlight in order to effectively meet the standards? I’ve never had any experience with applying to a new school because my current one runs kindergarten through 12th grade. I’m especially worried because the people I know who are at a higher level that I am aren’t, for the most part, even applying for other schools.

Also, does the fact that I’m applying for sophomore year change anything about the chances of my acceptance?

Gah, I’m really nervous… What do you all say?

Does anyone have any current information on Mather 2 ?

Bump
