Deerfield Academy [Deerfield, MA]

“Patience is a Virtue.”

Dorm assignments are up!! I got Harold Smith rm 107. Where are you guys?

Where do y’all receive the dorm assignments?

Your mom/dad received a login and password to Dainfo (which is found at the top of danet) when you received your schedule in the mail. After you log on, go to my actions and click on your name. Your dorm assignment should be there

@deerfield15 Thanks!

Check out the facebook pictures and video of the post-Irene flooding of the Deerfield river. The lower fields at DA and at least part of Main Street are totally under water. Here’s hoping for some significant improvement before move-in next week.

This flooding sure looks bad. Any updates on things returning to normal?

Hello any DA students/alum, I’m thinking of applying to be an upper for the 2012-2013 school year. I have a question regarding admissions- just to give you a little background- I go to a public school in Orange County, I have excellent academics (211 PSAT) and am taking two APs as a sophmore, but nothing to set me apart from the horde of applicants… except that I play cello and water polo.

My question is: Is it beneficial for me to contact the coach/music director to guarantee/help my acceptance?

the thirds LAX field is under a foot of silt, rest of fields should be ok. might need a new scoreboard…

I think I found the Deerfield CCers at the freshmen camp, lol.

What do you think helps/impresses the administrators and will give u a better chance to getting in? What do you think you did that helped DA to accept you?

Hey guys!

I’m an international student here. Well, I was just wondering how they’ll send out their decision mails and by when? I live in Asia so i doubt it’ll arrive on the dot on 10th of march. Also, what are the chances of me getting in? My ssat scores were excellent and i’ve had good teacher recommendations ; my personal essays were good too. interview went great, we got along just fine and the interviewer even sent me a postcard for the holidays wishing me all the best etc.

What was the acceptance rate for DA last year 2011?

Thanks guys!!!

Deerfield, like many other schools, look for well-rounded kids that have a passion for learning and everything that they do.

The acceptance rate for DA last year was 13.5% last year…the lowest of all the HADES or GLADCHEMMS if I’m not mistaken

woah! that’s really really REALLY low! what did you get for your SSAT if you don’t mind me asking? Also, what made you choose deerfield? Just a little over a month till the results; i’m terrified.

Hey there!
please evaluate my chances of getting into Deerfield!

I’m from Asia, I speak fluent english, it’s my main language ever since I was born.
I am in the top Girls’ school in my country, I have been also accepted into the triple science (that means i take about 8 subjects a term. together with bio, chem and physics all at the same time) course in my school which is a very hard and accelerated course as well.
Grades: All A’s, occasional B’s.
SSAT scores: 96%
Interview: went great, she liked me, was very impressed.
Essays: great! my counselor said that it was the best he’s seen in a long time.

Extra curricular activities:

dance (school team) - 9 years
music (piano) (grade 7 trinity music college certificate) - 8 years
swimming (local Gold award) - 9 years
School government/council - activity coordinator - 2 years

that’s all! please PLEASE reply! thanks all

Hi there, I
m looking to apply in the winter for Deerfield for 10th grade. Last year I got A
s and B
s and this year I
m getting mostly A
s with a couple of B+ but next year if I went all out I feel like I could get high 90
s. I also feel as though I could do well on the ISEE Exam. I`m very strong in extra corriculars and feel as though I could do great on the interview along with the recommendations. Could I get in to Deerfield? It looks amazing and like a great experience and has excellent academics, athletics and people. I feel like I would fit in great. Would I get accepted?

Your stats are within acceptable range, but it is hard to speculate on the chances as admission to Deerfield is very selective and it depends on your complete application file. Try to improve your grades, do well on your SSATs, essays, and the interview. Find leadership positions in your ECs. Good luck.

@jpw2325 - Good job, as Deerfield2015 said, your stats are within range to be considered for such a highly selective school as Deerfield Academy.

My student will be entering the 10th grade as a new sophomore at Deerfield in September. Her stats were not unlike yours. She was also an athlete. Given that we just went through the admissions process, I would recommend that you consider the following:

If you are truly interested in attending boarding school in 2013, apply to more than one school - Deerfield and many other like schools are highly competitive academically, athletically and in admissions. Deerfield has an acceptance rate of about 13.5%. Others have similar admit percentages.

Set yourself apart from other candidates. We found that the interview was the single most important and decisive component to the admissions process. Plan to visit each school, try to plan your visits for the summer, if possible, when Admissions Officers will be less pressed to adhere to a schedule and have more time to spend with you. They are more likely to remember you. Prepare yourself well for the interview. Be yourself. Make sure to convey why you want to experience/need boarding school rather than why you may be a ‘solid candidate’ for admission. Remember, most accepted applicants are qualified to be there.

Keep in touch with AOs regularly. If Deerfield is your first choice (and I believe the best one), by all means, let the AO know that explicitly throughout the process. Do not be afraid to telephone and to write.

Start the application process early. Most applications are available throughout the year. Ask for them. Read the essay questions and take time and care to express yourself fully and carefully. Dream, express yourself. Refrain from answering essays based upon what you feel a particular school may want to hear. Complete all essays on your own.

Practice for the SSAT or ISEE throughout the summer, there are plenty of practice books to review. Take the test(s) more than once. Your top score will count for applications. Read books, read books and read some more books.

Make sure that schools that you apply to ‘fit’ your needs and personality. After visiting many schools, I can tell you that Deerfield felt most comfortable for my child for many reasons, including size, mix of student body (day vs. boarding), academics and athletics. Only you will know which school feels best after visiting each one. Pay special attention to the students when visiting (if not during summer), how happy do they seem to be there? Talk with them, ask questions.

Finish the year strong. Your goal is to make your application as difficult to refuse as possible and to set yourself apart. Keep on doing what you have been doing and you’ll be fine. Good luck.

Good advice, with a caveat on #2… In the summer boarding schools are ghost towns. Perhaps a revisit in the summer for your interview, but not your first visit. You want to be there when school is in session.
