Deerfield and Choate Waitlisted Update

I got waitlisted by both. Was wondering if anybody has gotten an update.

Two people got off of the Choate waitlist

Yeah but isn’t there supposed to be a formal email regarding the status, whether good or bad?

My mom called today and as for Choate’s waitlist, they are still going through those who are accepted and don’t know if they are going to waitlist yet. They also said that they should be contacting people next week if we don’t hear from them this week. @skyper123456

They will write a formal email only when they are sure that they are either finished with taking people off, or won’t take anybody off in the first place. They wouldn’t write an email to let people know that they are taking some kids off.

How about Deerfield? Do you know anything

I was waitlisted on Choate and Deerfield, in addition to Groton, Andover and Exeter applying as a 9th grade international boarder. Groton, Andover and Exeter have all sent emails saying that they will not take anyone off of the waitlist because they are full. I haven’t heard from Deerfield or Choate yet. One point I would like to bring up is:

I was particularly hopeful about my chances with Deerfield because I am a soccer goalkeeper, and I represent the best youth academy team in my nation and have sent multiple highlight reels to Deerfield. I met up with the two coaches of the varsity team and they said that their star GK is graduating this year and they have no replacement. I even received a postcard from a current PG student on the soccer team, and I had a nice email chat with him, all before March 10. Deerfield always was my first choice, and I was really enthused by the student’s wording in that email (“potential Deerfield athletes”, “decision regarding next year”). This is by no means a complaint, and I would still be very happy to attend DA if I were to be pulled off the waitlist. I just want to know if this is common and whether Deerfield, or any other school, would bother sending a postcard and asking a student to have an email conversation with a student if they knew said student was not going to be admitted?

My son received postcards, emails AND phone calls from both coaches and students at several boarding schools . These occurred right up until M10. However, he was waitlisted at those schools, despite the contact.

Even if the coaches and teams want you, they don’t make the admissions decisions. They may have influence but athletics is only one piece of the admissions puzzle.

You may want to email the coaches and see if they can check on your status and put in another plug for you.

Haven’t heard from Deerfield but same. 99th perc SSAT, A/A+ average in all advanced honors courses, first in class, three sports etc but WL. My advice to applicants is to invent something or start something – be entrepreneurial. It was a good learning experience for college.

@SoccerKid1101 my child had very similar experience with Choate. It strikes me as totally unethical that they don’t convey clearly to the kids that they do NOT have the ultimate say. He was told he was “in”. Sent texts, emails and postcards by players saying “we can’t wait to have you play with us. You are going to start on varsity” etc. then he got waitlisted. He was crushed.

This year we were guarded. He applied as a repeat 9th grader and got into five top schools. I was impressed by the Exeter coaches (even though he was waitlisted there) as they made it VERY clear that he was one of their top recruits and they’d be pushing for him with admissions but they could not guarantee that would result in an acceptance.

I think that is the way to handle this situation. It’s horrible to lead 13-yo kids on.

Anyway, think about reapplying next year and repeating 9th. Cast a wider net. It worked for us and he’s going to Andover next fall! Good luck to you.

I just received an email from Deerfield regarding the waitlist. Did anyone else get this email?

I replied on the wait list thread. We got it, too, but we had requested to not stay on WL previously. Do not know what to make of that…?

@mtmtmt1227 and @buuzn03 Same thing happened to us last year: DC was waitlisted, we quickly said “no thank you” to the WL and then received an email post A10 checking to see if we wanted to stay on the WL. We were scratching our heads too.

Nothing to scratch your head about. They didn’t remove you from their email list of waitlisted kids. They’ve been pretty busy and didn’t get around to it yet.

my daughter received the offer from Deerfield on16 April as well.

@Qingnan Hi! If you don’t mind me asking, what grade was your daughter applying into and did you apply for financial aid?
