Deferral questions

I was deferred from UChicago, and I have some questions about what my next plan of action should be.

My dad wants me to get another recommendation letter from a teacher. My question is, how do I submit this letter to UChicago? Can I somehow re-submit via the Common App? Or do I ask my teacher to send it directly (by paper mail or email) to the admissions office? And what date does it need to be in by? Because I don't want to make my teacher rush to finish it.

Look at your deferral letter, you can submit online and the due date is in there.

Just an important point: your chances of moving from deferral to accepted are not 10 percent. They are either zero percent if you never send UChicago another bit of information, or display any more interest, or much, much higher than 10 percent if you handle your deferral the right way.

Google is your friend on this one, but my advice is to be measured, calm, don’t overwhelm them with material, maybe get another “push” teacher recommendation (from a teacher who already wrote you a recommendation), work hard in your classes, and stay non-overbearingly in touch with the admissions representative in your area so they end up rooting for you, and not forgetting about you.

I don’t know if a recommendation from the same teacher would be useful. When i called the admissions office asking about the optional 3rd recommendation, i was told something along the lines of “only send a third recommendation if it says something new about you”.

obviously, they don’t want to be reading the same thing about you, and i doubt they want it from the same person. If I were you, I would look for a recommendation (not necessarily from a teacher) that presents you in a new light. Something new that will make them think “hmmm, lets take another look at this application”

good luck!

Thanks for all your replies! I really appreciate it!

I Googled on how to submit an additional rec letter, and there seem to be two ways: Either uploading it via my UChicago account or mailing (email or paper, I’m not sure. If anyone can clarify this for me, that would be great) it to them. But if I upload it to my UChicago account, won’t my teacher have to send it to me, thus giving me access to it…? Is that okay?

And one more thing. If I email my regional counselor, what should I say? Should I just explain why I’m interested in UChicago? It just seems a little weird to be emailing them out of the blue and saying “Hey I want to go here and here’s why!” Or is that basically what I’m supposed to do?

Sorry for all the questions! I just want to be doubly sure about everything before I actually do anything.
