deferral/mid year grades

If I was deferred early action, but got straight A's first semester (3 AP classes, 2 non-AP electives) and also included a letter detailing my study abroad/homestay that I will be doing in March and April...will that help me? Is there anything else I can do (I sent in 3 recs in November - science/English/music teachers) so I'm not sure if I should send another one.

It is important that you let them know how much you want to attend, and why. Show them the love.

Yeah, man. Using the comments and advice I gained from idad and ohio_mom I wrote out a 2 page letter expressing my continued interest in Chicago and basically included a section on the bottom where my parents, my counselor and I signed saying that if Chicago accepts me, my deposit will be mailed that day.

and have you heard anything?

my admissions counselor called my house and told me that she was really impressed by my tenacity and said my continued interest in Chicago would be noted in committee.

Good job, thatindiandude. Certainly sounds hopeful!

Chicago called me up, too...but all I heard was like three or four people laughing.

As the link idad posted earlier ( http://chronicle.uchicago.edu/060216/applications.shtml ) notes, they are starting to read applications about now. If an application is on the fence, it may be read again, later. If you have something of significance to say - or to show - your regional admissions officer - don't wait too much longer. Last year, my son's admissions officer suggested that he send a short update letter - not longer than a page. I don't know that it helped - but it didn't hurt as he is a first-year now. I would be careful of sending 'fluff' - no 'student of the month' type stuff. And if you are sending a letter restating your interest - let it be your best letter ever.

So a follow up letter that I was nominated "Funny Guy '06" for my high school probably isn't the best thing to send?

If the admissions counselor didn't call you, does that mean they're not interested in you? I sent them many things such as a top 10 list of reasons why I wanted to attend UChicago. I also emailed my counselor many times telling her I really wanted to go there. They never called...is that going a problem?

Smilies06,
a call is a good sign - but I don't think the lack of a call is a bad sign (no call for my son, either, and he's in).

the call thing is ridiculous. i think it has to do with your regional officer. i dont like mine at all. whenever i email him, he takes forever to respond, etc, etc. it isnt only me either. it seems like eveyone from my county has the same problem

but can we basically conclude that those who send in truly significant updates to their application (academically and extra curriculary/recs/essays etc) are truly helping their cases?

i mean, how are deferreds considered in the eyes of the admissions counselor? I wrote a guarantee on the letter i sent them, with the signature of my parents saying that should i be accepted to chicago, i would post my deposit back to them that very day.

^could it help? sorry for the spastic post.

'but can we basically conclude that those who send in truly significant updates to their application (academically and extra curriculary/recs/essays etc) are truly helping their cases?'

It probably depends on the individual case, and, unfortunately we're not going to know for sure for another five and a half weeks or so. If your update successfully addressed an issue that was present in your original application, it could certainly help. One of these issues could be fit - how well do your and Chicago fit each other.

Unfortunately, there is a numbers game here - too many valid applicants for too few spaces. Which is why one has to apply to several schools. I think that, at this point, you've given it your best shot. Unless Spirited Away gets that time machine reved up, its down to waiting, and trying to enjoy life in the moment as much as possible. Try to focus on school and EC's, spend time with your friends, even shock your parents by (say) attending a movie with them. They will miss you a lot; you might even miss them (a little, LOL). It will all be very different next year.

If you haven't done so already, look at Jabob Poteets post on February 17th, on the uncommon app blog:

Should I send another recommendation?
I have a teacher who I think would write me a very good recommendation, but I don't want to bombard them. Also, is there anything else I should talk about in my "continued interest" letter?

i think it'd be a little late to send another recommendation in. my adcom said feb 10 was the deadline for supplemental materials. but maybe not, i dunno.

dressedup,
Have you sent a letter following the deferral?

ohio_mom:

I contacted my representative and asked what would be the best steps to take following my deferral; she said keep up my grades and I could send another recommendation if I'd like (I wasn't sure if I should because I sent an extra recommendation with my application).

In that case, send the extra rec (if its likely to be really good). And good luck!
