I know how you feel,200171884. Nothing hurts more then being deferred when you know of people with lower stats then you that got accepted but wont attend. It also is annoying when people in the department you applied too said you’d be a perfect fit for the university… Head up we can’t be deferred forever.

200171884,

Sorry to hear you were deferred. I would be willing to bet that your ACT is the only thing holding you back. Unfortunately, college admissions is kind of a crap shoot. As far as the girl that you know that got in, you said she had a lower rank and GPA but what was her ACT score? Unless you both had identical applications, it is really hard to compare. Also, another thing that can set two people apart is the essay. I know that it is just “Why do you want to go here” but from what I have heard OSU wants that essay to bleed scarlet and gray. Your friend may also have submitted additional materials with her application.

The good news is that you were deferred and you still have a chance. Send in whatever additional materials you have. Send in your 7th semester grades. Check with your guidance counselor to see if you have an improved rank after 7th semester and have that submitted. Try to get some recommendations from teachers and submit those. Even though OSU doesn’t ask for those things, it won’t hurt you in trying to plead your case. Did you take the SAT also? If so, does that correspond to a higher score? Take the next round of ACT and even though it will be cutting it close, get that sent in. If you haven’t already but the Real ACT Prep Book (it is the official one) and be sure to practice practice practice. Good luck to you!

@runningmomof3: Thank you for all of the advice. Unfortunately, my ACT is a low one and I would assume her’s is a little better than mine and probably is. I just suck at that darn test, by no means are the classes I’m taking now “easy”. I’m also enrolled in college courses at the local university and did really well last semester. The admissions office says that they use ACT scores ONTOP of class rank and GPA, so if anything, we should have had a comparable entry process if not mine a little more legged ahead due to my involvement in multiple clubs and activities as well as leadership posistions I hold. My GPA and Class Rank is definitley better and her ACT is better, so we should have been semi-comparable? About the essay, my essay was rather good and I did express how I’d love to get an education from The Ohio State University without basically saying “I just want to go there because it looks cool and fun and your sports are good.” haha I had teachers read and review my essay and they thought it was pretty solid and well developed, so I think I’m good on the essay. Along the lines of sending supplementals with my application, I have the bases covered there as well. I sent in my resume as well as a letter of recommendation. After hearing of my deferral, I did have a 7 semester transcript sent in and I DID improve my class rank and GPA once again. I also had 2 more letters of recommendation sent in as well. I did NOT take the SAT and it’s not a real popular test in the eastern part of the US unless you want to do medical or science related work. So, I’ve only taken the ACT and taken it a total of 3 times. Unfortunately, I cannot take the ACT again as most colleges won’t accept anything after February first and the next ACT test is in mid February sometime. I took it this past December, 2010 and that was the last time I could take it. So, I have all my bases covered, I just have to sadly sit and wait patiently to hear back from them.

Also, another quick question for everyone. What do you think deferral means? Are people who are deferred like in limbo between being accetped and deferred to a regional campus or are we inbetween regional campus deferral and rejection?

Deferred means you’re not early admission material but you still might have what it takes for OSU. If you here going to be rejected they would have rejected you.

31 ACT and 3.4 gpa. Not amazing but still. Come on OSU.

Is December really considered early admission? Everyone I know applied before me.

^I know. We must all sadly wait to hear back. I can’t wait for February to get here so they can start letting us deferred people know what they want to do with us. Truly hope we all get in. I want to be a Buckeye oh so badly!

No. I think, 2001, that you get thrown back in the pool of regular decision applicants. Think of it almost like starting even again. A friend who was deferred E-action by several schools subsequently was accepted by all of them. So be patient. You were not rejected.

I found out that I was deferred today and I’m pretty upset about having to wait even more to find out if I get in. Someone suggested writing a letter (I guess to admissions) if I really wanted to get in. Ohio State is literally the only school I want to go to. I was wondering if writing some form of a letter, which I guess might even be like another essay, would even be advisable. I’m going to submit my improved 7th semester and 2 or 3 or 4 recommendations for sure and hope that helps.

@OSUBuckeye: Welcome to the “Deferred Club”. It’s def. not fun knowing you have to wait more, I know you feel. Sucks. As for you writing a letter, OSU admissions says that your writing of a letter or someone on your behalf doesn’t make a major a decision in the admissions process, BUT it can’t hurt anything. I too sent in my improved 7 semester transcript and I’ve also submitted 2 letters of recommendation with it. Best of luck to you!! I hope we both get in as I am as passionate about OSU as you.

ahh i cant believe i still havent heard! do you guys think i should call or wait until next week? OSUBuckeye…im sorry:/ osu is the only school i want to attend/can see myself at! did you have borderline stats because i do :/

^ ^ ^ I think it would be best to, sadly, wait it out and just check your OSU account everyday until you find out. The people in the office of admissions will more than likely tell you the same thing, they don’t know much information on when exactly your application will be reviewed. They have to let you know soon, as the cut off for applications will be February 1st! So, be patient and check your status online everyday. I’ve heard that the admissions office only updates statuses once a day and it’s not until around 4pm (Ohio time), so don’t bother checking in the morning or afternoon. Best of luck to you! Go Bucks!!

Foodgud, a friend of mine’s parent called OSU and they basically told her it all comes down to who’s looking at your application. Some are a lot faster than others. But if you’ve been waiting 12+ weeks I would definitely call, it wouldn’t hurt anything and maybe there was a mistake made somewhere along the line.

With my 7th semester I’ll be right around that 3.4 area. My selling points are a 30 on the ACT and good participation my junior and senior years. One bad thing is I was tardy to school 20 times last year although at least half were excused, which the transcripts don’t take into account -_-. I go to a private Catholic school so the classes and competition are considered to be harder in general. 62 out of 138 at the end of my junior year (45%), although I’m 100% positive I’ll jump a few people with my 3.7 on the new semester. I’m pretty much going to do everything in my power that might make the slightest difference in influencing their decision. I’m lucky I found this forum because it made me feel 100% more calm about being deferred =)

@OSUBuckeye: I’m glad you’re comfortable with the whole being deferred, I’m nervous as all get out and bitining my nails waiting their response. From reading recent deferral forums, it seems like a lot of people are being deferred to regional campuses and I’m under second review and I hope my fate isn’t the same at theirs. I’m extremely worried!!!

Anyone else have any deferral questions, comments, or stories that they want to share on this forum?

And this video is one of the reasons why I so badly want to be a Buckeye. I’m so nervous! This video is great!! Top notch.

Thought I would join this thread, just got deferred. Can’t believe I have to wait another 2 months!

OSU seriously has gotten harder to get into. My sister two years ago applied with worse stats than mine and got in even after February 1st.

I guess I’ll start writing supplemental essays and get in another LOR. Good luck to all.

@EddieGorge. I know man, welcome to the unofficial club. It’s not fun to be in this club. I applied On October 29, 2010 and it DOES STINK A LOT to know you have to wait until March 31st to get a final answer. My mom called it a “Mental Stresser” today when we talked to my guidance counselor while filing the FAFSA, haha. Oh well, nothing we can do but (try to) patiently wait it out. It sucks. With this wonderful deferral, I can also expect to get $0.00 from the Morrill Scholars Program scholarship that I applied for since they have to submit “winners” the first week of March. So, I’ve now been shafted by OSU 2 times now. I really want to go there, but it looks not to be in my favor. Oh well. Best of luck to you. Hope we both get in.

Your decision can always arrive prior to March 31st, so there’s still a chance! The consideration of the Feb. 1st applications will most likely take less time to complete due to the fact that merit money can’t be taken into account/decrease in very qualified applicants (less competition for scholarships on the basis of academic standing). Following the Dec. 1st deadline, OSU will usually admit the stand-outs and reject those who lack the credentials to be successful at Ohio State. The deferral pool actually has an edge over many who submit their applications for the Feb. 1st deadline. ‘Deferrees’ may not have what it takes to gain an automatic acceptance (whatever IT is), but most of them have a good chance of acceptance in regular admission. Admissions just wants to gain a deeper look into each applicant and possibly gain some reassurance (7th semester grades, add. letters of recommendations) that he/she would be an excellent fit at the university. I suggest that we all stay optimistic and make light of our situation. Technically, we hold an advantageous position above the other applicants as we all have considerable pull on our sides! :)

@200171884:

Yeah I sent in my MSP application not even an hour before my status changed to deferred… makes it feel like a complete waste of time. I have huge doubts about getting into the Scholars Program as well.

The thing is, sarahm17, is that my 7th semester was pretty bad because of the 2nd quarter this year. I legitimately tried pretty hard to do well but all my classes got harder the 2nd quarter so my GPA and grades dropped. I don’t think that will help at all.

Anyone thinking about still going to Ohio State if they get deferred to a branch?
