Deferred by Ohio State

@Sarahm17: I appreciate those words you typed up there, I hope they’re correct! I do hope deferred people have pull over people who are just applying. How do you know that’s a legit statement? I’ve heard people say that “people on the deferred list are borderline to being admitted” but I have my doubts. I’m not sure how correct that is either. If it is, then WOO HOO! lol. :)

@EddieGorge: I’m sorry that you sent in your MSP application like an hour before you got deferred. That stinks major. You and me will probably not see a penney of their money, but oh well. It is what it is. Just submit the FAFSA asap! I’m estimated to get $5,500 in financial aid from the gov’t. Hopefully I do. And don’t worry, I had my doubts about getting any cash from MSP anyway, so oh well. It just sucks cause my diversity essay was pretty awesome (if I do say so myself), but I just sent it in the mail today to the admissions office to let them know where I stand on diversity and maybe it will help with admissions? Can’t hurt right? ALSO, sorry to hear about your 7 semester grades. Luckily I improved mine and my GPA and class rank both moved up in my favor. Best of luck to you still and hopefully we’ll both get in! I think we will. We need to try to stay positive, I’ve kind of let my mind go into the dumps about it. Time to change it. lol

To answer the question about attending a regional campus, I will NOT be doing that. If I get denied admission to Columbus I will be attending Kent State University. I visited the Lima campus and was not impressed at all. I def. want the big college experience and the small campuses don’t provide that.

I was just accepted into umd engineering yesterday so i see no reason why i shudnt have been accepted here lol. Ah well. At least i have somewhere to go but osu is still my number 1. i hope us deferred find out soon

@EddieGorge That’s not good to hear buuuut, you can always send in a letter of intent, contact your admissions counselor, or send an updated resume (like I did). My admissions counselor was even willing to meet up with me in person to answer any questions I had. Since OSU is such a big school, and most accepted applicants choose other schools to attend (roughly 2/3 of all accepted students don’t attend), the chance of deferred applicants being accepted is pretty high.

@200171884 Adcoms want to get a feel of roughly how many of the early admission applicants will actually attend, and level out the playing field for borderline applicants of ED (deferrees) in regular admission. I talked to an admissions rep on the phone, and they said that supplemental materials sent in after a deferral will be beneficial in the regular admissions pool (most RD applicants don’t send in additional information). The credentials of those in the RD pool will most likely match up or fall below those of the ED ‘deferrees’ (thus, giving MANY ‘deferrees’ as edge). Also, due to applying early, adcoms already know that your interest in attending OSU is probably greater than most RD applicants–which can work in your favor. If you truly believe you stats are above average or early admission material, I’m sure getting in through regular admission will be a breeze.

@sarahm17

Much appreciated for the information. I was going to call them to see what’s up with being deferred but that info definitely is reassuring. I’ll definitely send a LOR or why I want to get in essay to admissions.

@kindasortasmart

Congrats on getting into Maryland! That definitely is a hard school to get into. Sorry you got deferred though.

@200171884

Yeah I’m trying not to get to down about it either. I did my FAFSA almost a week ago and got $7,800. So that was good lol. I haven’t visited the branch campuses and there’s only one guy I know who actually went to one before transferring to Columbus. I don’t even remember what I put down for branch campus preference, but I think I’ll just go to UC or Miami if I can’t get into OSU Columbus.

Is anyone else sending additional info to undergraduate admissions? I was thinking about sending a new letter of recommendation and a new personal statement.

I was about to see what OSU’s response was by calling the office of Undergraduate Admissions, but apparently I called the wrong number… twice. :?

Edit: called a third time, literally dialed in 6-1-4-2-9-2-3-9-8-0 to make sure I wasn’t tripping or nothing. I asked if it is Ohio State, and some guy goes, “Nah…” W, T, F, seriously.

Anyway, just a bit of some news for us deferred, I talked to my guidance counselor and apparently the number of applicants for Ohio State went from 22000 last year for to 30,000 this year, so they are going through a lot of applications and deferring a lot “on the bubble” applicants so that they will see how many of the people they accepted will actually enroll before they accept any of the deferred.

BTW:

If anyone was planning on calling OSU’s office… do not call this number, they are not Ohio State University:

(614)-292-3980

@EddieGorge: When I initially send in my application, I sent in my resume and a letter of rec. from my teacher/cc coach from my HS. After I heard I was deferred, I had my guidance counselor send in my 7 semester transcript (which I improved) and a letter of rec from her as well. I also asked my old boss, who is the auditor of our county, to write a letter of rec. on my behalf to send in to undergrad. admissions and she said she would as well. The final thing I sent in was a personally written “essay” that I used for the Morrill Scholars Program scholarship. I tweaked it a bit, but it basically reflects how I would provide diversity, being Mexican-American, and how I would continue to commit myself to the progression of diversity on campus by being active and blah, blah, blah. Although sadly, if you remember from your official “defer” letter from OSU, it said: “Note that your may submit updated transcripts or test scores until the postmark of February 1”. So, sadly, it’s past that date, so I don’t know how well they’d look at stuff you send in now, but it can’t hurt anything for you to still send stuff in.

As for the phone number you’ve been dialing for the office of undergraduate admissions at OSU, that number IS correct. I have it saved in my cell phone and have made my fair share of calls to that number and it IS LEGIT. You must be dialing it wrong or something? The phone number again is: 1-614-292-3980. You can also call the university switch board and they can transfer your call if that number ( for some odd reason) isn’t working for you by dialing: 1-614-292-6446. Hope one of those numbers works out for you!

Wow… I forgot you had to put the 1 before a 10 digit number. Man, I really am stupid. Yeah ignore what I said.

Thanks for your input 200171884. I have a few letters lined up so that should help, hopefully.

I got 4 LORs sent in before feb 1st, and have another that didn’t get sent in. I’m wondering if I should send the 5th just because. And I’ve been checking the website everyday waiting to see if the “deferred” goes to “accepted”.

@OSUBuckeye: I think you should be completly fine with 4 LORs. I don’t think you really need to send in the fifth because even though they look at LORs, they’re not going to make that big of a impact on admitting you. I talked to an admissions counselor yesterday and she said that right now, they’re going to go through the deferred applicants and look more so at their academics in high school via transcripts, grades, GPA, class rank etc and base decisions along those lines with other factors. Also, I wouldn’t really check the status of your application until at least mid-February. The admissions counselor said that it would probably be more like mid-March that they’ll let deferred applicants know their final decision, but for a word of advice they said that they don’t update the online applicant statuses until around 4pm (EST). Hope it all works out for you and hope all of us deferred applicants get accepted! Go Bucks!

Mid-March is super later in my opinion. I know that’s what being deferred means but in all honesty I think that is such a long wait. I can do March 1, March 10th at the latest but the 20’s of March? I don’t know if I can wait that long and chance anything with my other schools.

@Cmm…: I know what you mean, March is SUCH a long time from now, but if it’s what I have to do to get into OSU (I hope!) then I’ll do it! They said they’ll let deferred people know on a “rolling basis” after February 1st, so you could know tomorrow, in 3 days, 2 weeks, or March 31st at the latest. Haha. I would anticipate mid-March though since the admissions counselor told me that they would do “a mid-March” review of the deferred applicants. Sucks, I know. My second school of choice is Kent State University and I called them and talked to them and they said that I’d still be guarenteed a spot in the Class of 2015 still by the end of March and that housing won’t be an issue either. So, call to your other prospective colleges and see what they have to say. Hope we all get in, I’m starting to get very antsy. It’s hard to wait much longer!! Hang in there, we’re still in the running!!

27 act, 3.6 gpa, very few extracurriculars and still deferred. I feel like my denial will be any day now!

Hey guys,

Still deferred over here and hanging in. :)

I got deferred too. looks like ill be getting that rejection package by the end of March

Deferred isn’t a rejection. If they didn’t want you they would have said no.

Maybe deferrals have less to do with your stats than you think.

i think you should chill. chances are you’ll get accepted. I was just accepted to OSU in January (: with a 3.11GPA cumulative and a 1940 on the SAT

Has anyone on the deferred list learnt their fate yet? haha.

They said march, so I’m just going to hold off until then. But no, I checked recently.

I was just accepted a few days ago after being deferred, I also heard today that I recieved the National Buckeye Scholarship. I am from illinois and attend a very competitive public high school

I was admitted into pre-business
ACT 28
GPA (out of 5) 4.44
