Deferred

Just to let everyone know, the not so good news is starting to come out too. Here is the message on my daughter’s status:

Status: After an initial evaluation, your application has been referred for a second review. A final decision will be made by the end of March. You will receive further information by mail.

Sorry to hear that. Wish your D the best of luck.

Is she an in-state applicant?

Thanks Dad II.

She is OOS. She has already been accepted to her in-state safety.

Im sorry to hear that..best of luck
What are her numbers?
Im asking because my friend is an OOS too and his numbers seem to be below the requirements, yet he really wants to go to OSU...so just for the sake of comparison

what are her stats?

Her stats are roughly 3.5 GPA and 29 ACT. Her GPA puts her at the top 30% at her school. She had weak ECs - she has a job, but no school related activities.

This makes me nervous...

My GPA is around the same, but your Ds scores destroy mine.

IDK, my ECs are pretty freaking good (Not to gloat or anything)

Maybe it shows that they are putting a heavy emphasis on ECs.

Does anyone else see that?

Maybe I only see that because I know it's the one thing that could put me over the top.

Kind of surprised, advmom. Either one of two things is happening. 1) either the applicant pool took another huge jump this year, which could be the case, but while expecting some upward movement, I wouldn't expect two huge jumps in a row. OR 2) Admissions is still trying to gauge the overall quality of the applicant pool.

Just a hunch, but I think it's the latter. I'm certain that the applicant pool will improve to a degree, but when it all shakes out close to a top quarter class rank, combined with a 29 ACT should get her in.

Based on '07 numbers, your daughter's class rank is in the bottom 10% (91% graduated in top quarter), but her ACT is at about at the 67th percentile (middle 50% range 26-30). How competitive is her high school? If Ohio State views it as highly competitive, that will mitigate the class rank.

Still, at the end of the day, I think she gets in. Be patient.

Yes, her class rank is low for OSU. Her HS is on the Newsweek list of top high schools, but OSU does not recruit anywhere in our area, so they may not be familiar with it.

Ohio State's first batch of decisions typically involve the sure bets. This almost sounds really soon for a deferment. But like sh said, the quality of the applicant pool is already projected...and it must be killer.

I think a 3.5 GPA and a 29 ACT score should get you into OSU! My goodness.

are you serious? I got in with a 3.4 and a 27...tho I also had many activities and a great essay. She should definitly get in eventully IMO

Were you a 1st generation college student or underepresented minority, viperm90? That would definitely have put you over the top more than ECs or essay.

This is making me feel a lot better (midwestmom, I don't mean to celebrate on your Ds deferral)

But it does seem like they are really looking at the overall student which shifts in my favor IMO.

sh60614, nope I am not really a minority or a first gen college student. Tho my essay did talk about how I moved around the world and had many difficulties adapting to the united states. But I am in no way a minority (white, caucasian). Just shows why you can never overlook any part of the application.

ADVMOM,
It wouldn't hurt to give the admissions office at OSU a call and make sure that they have the correct stats for your D. My S had a friend at school who was told he would have to attend a regional campus. He called the office at OSU and found out the the school had sent the wrong transcripts. OOPS!
