Deferrees...did you send in additional material?

Those who were deferred ea...did you send in any additional information since december? if so what?

not even a letter

my friend sent in another essay, rec, cd, student rec

please don't post things like that kev...that's hardcore :)

that's a ton of stuff, i was sent in an essay, research abstract, and art portfolio ..but im afraid of making the adcom angry by sending in too much o well it's only yale..haha

I planned to send a more recent CD of my playing but then I realized it probably won't change anything. I don't know. I haven't sent anything yet. Should I?

haha hao =) she needs all the help she can get!

I had sent an additional letter, which also ended up going to all the other schools I applied to.

A letter, a GC call, 2 senior year teacher recos...

Ya'll chill out. They do not want to have that much information on you. They have already read your file but now you are just giving them too much stuff . They can get rather annoyed at you. A letter or so with any new information that is completely acceptable as well as your GC giving some more push for you in the mid-year report. Other than that is pretty much over kill. Just do well on your senior grades. I have not had anything extra sent I just have contacted a coach more with some more athletic successes and then had my GC send in my Mid-Year Report with strong support of me.

I agree with lauren. There is such a thing as OVERKILL. Honestly, if I were doing admissions, well first of all I'd admit myself, and second of all, I'd get really ****ed at the people who sent a bizillion things in. I mean, yes. It's Yale. But good grief you guys. I think sending all that stuff probably makes you look overly desperate or like you think the Adcom isn't smart enough to make a decision about you based on the things they already have. Let's not go overboard. We do want to make the people who decide our fate HAPPY and not overwhelmed. The end.

ive heard stories of people sending in papers they wrote since having been deferred and got A's on as well as three page long letters and the like

it's so hard to decide whether or not to send something in, b/c it could be the thing that really stands out to them and makes you seem special, or it could be the last straw...making them hate you for sending in so much tough call

If you need to write a letter. ONLY on new information about accomplishments and the like that your GC could/would not cover. You have applied and been deferred. It is not that you are not qualified they just have not yet gotten a feel for who they want in their class. Basically 1 in 6 deferred students gets in. We have a rather high likelyhood. Only send more if it gives major insight into how you are different.

I agree with laurenemma: Sending too much extra material is more likely to hurt you than not enough.

The admissions officers should already have a clear picture of both your achievements and your personality from your EA application, essays, etc. If they didn't like what they saw, they would have rejected rather than deferred you in that round, and it's now a question of balancing out the class. The only possible reasons to send more material are to pass along genuine news (e.g., a new achievement or award) and/or to say--if it's true--that Yale is still your first choice.

I believe the advice on Yale's website is true (see http://www.yale.edu/admit/freshmen/application/supplementary.html): "You should think carefully before submitting supplementary material. There are many successful applicants who submit only the items that we require. There are also cases in which mediocre submissions or too many extra items can work against a candidate." Just because other people keep sending more material doesn't mean they are helping their applications.

My GC called the regional adcom to find out what she could, and he said that considering my specific situation, an additional letter (this one extremely strong) would be helpful. I also sent him a brief email regarding a vaguery on my app, which he seemed to appreciate.
All that said, I have no idea whether it had any effect! We'll find out on April 1!

april seems so far away would really like to go to sleep now and not wake up until march 31st!

I didn't send in any supplemental material. I thought about it, then realized I'd only be sending in trivial information, or something they already would have stated in another part of my app. The only new information then is my mid-year report.
