Hey guys, who should I contact if I'd like to defer admission to MIT? I've some questions about what to do/fill up. Thanks--

Why are you deferring admission? Just curious, you don't have to say if it is a private reason.

I'm deferring admission because I have to serve a compulsory 2-year military service before going doing my undergrad studies.. I'm from Singapore =/

so why didn't you apply after the 2 year period?

because in singapore, applying after 2 years for males won't make sense, especially if teachers leave your high school and are harder to contact. Teachers also prefer to write recs for us in the same year that we graduate so they'll have a fresher impression of us - instead of having to rack their brains writing about students from 2 years ago.

mit_hopefulgirl are you in?

Lol you're killing us here...

and would you have to defer your admission for two years as well?

nonono... i'm going in this year=)

Guys, i posted in the international acceptees thread! Or was it the RD roster?

so... who should i contact? =/

MIT Office of Admissions?

Either give them a call or email them.

Anybody else? Do you have bad experience about deferring admission to MIT?

collegebound1010 are you leslie from RJ? mit_hopefulgirl - serene? I really admire the fact that you guys got into MIT as international applicants...congrats. =) I was from RI...i'm still a singaporean citizen so i've gotta serve national service, but i can defer NS till after undergrad since i'm still 16 =P i'm a permanent resident here so i applied domestically..but i still got waitlisted =\ ...i'm hopeful i'll get off though =) oh yea i was wondering...you can defer defer enrollment for 2 years?! i haven't thought about that. do you guys think its better to do NS before enrollment or the other way around?

wow titanium88 how did you know our names? Especially leslie's? Thanks for the congrats and all the best with getting off the waitlist into MIT too!

In Singapore, only PSC scholars can defer NS for college studies, so the majority of the male population only enters college 2 years later. (It may be 1 year now, because NS has been shortened). American colleges generally allow deferring of enrollment due to military service, so it's not a problem there.

Honestly, it's much better to do NS After graduation - your brain tends to get a little rusty after 2 years in the army.

lol tnx..I'm waiting for other colleges to reply too..

well I've got lots of RI/RJC friends so i just asked around..one of them (chin weicheng) told me that anand, leslie and serene got in. Anand's a US citizen so i figured..heh.

I heard leslie won the NSTS and got full scholarship up till Phd. that's insanely awesome. but leslie are you bonded by the government? you two are going out eh? ;)

Also, I heard that they make you an officer in NS if you have a college degree...so yea i'm probably gonna do my undergrad first. =)

Hoping like crazy to get the chance to see you guys at MIT in the fall!!!

I applied for the scholarship too, but apparently they may no longer be sponsoring schools like harvard, mit, stanford, caltech, etc.

Oh yes chin weicheng (i know him). Leslie was the merit winner btw, not the grand winner. (Yes, yes we've been together since our RSI trip to MIT in '03). Haha.

Where else did you apply to, and isn't it going to be tough going to college since you didn't do your a-levels? Or did you do like lots of APs to accelerate?

heh i just got the merit award.. it was kind of a fluke.. if i take the scholarship, yes I'll be bonded by the government...

Right now I'm serving my NS.. I hope to disrupt NS next year so I can attend MIT then instead of waiting 2 years =P

Do go ahead and defer NS.. it's a great idea :)
cheers--
