Is it possible to defer enrollment for a year?

I already turned in a nonrefundable housing deposit and enrollment deposit to a school on May 1. However, I recently found out that I got picked off the waitlist for one of my top choices...

I can't really afford to let the deposit fees go to waste, nor do I want them to.

I've heard of people deferring enrollment for a semester, but is it possible for me to defer enrollment for a year? (Go to the school I deposited $ to, then go to the second school the next year?)

That makes no sense. Simply pick the school you want to go to and call it a day.

Kids you meet freshman year are the ones you are most likely to bound with, potentially friends for life. Leaving them for another school to not have gone through what the freshmen went through and try to make friends? All for what? Deferring school for a year is fairly common. But that means coming in as a freshman. Waltzing in with a bunch of credits from another college and trying to pass as a sophomore while they held a freshmen spot for you and they will tell you where to shove those credits.

You’re better off pleading for your deposit back saying that you just got off a wait list.
