I want to joing the Israeli army after high school through a program that allows foreign citizens to serve in the army for 14.5 months in regular combat divisions. How and is it possible to get a deferrment for that long of a period.

Why the Israeli army?

are you Jewish?

sorry, I don't know the answer to your question... it's just a little bit odd you'd want to join now, with all the violence going on there.

stay safe!

no its not odd at all...i am a jew and i have a responsibility to the jewish nation..i have wanted to do this before all this **** started happening and i want to do it now more than ever. Can anyone give me info on the deferrments in my situation

its very honorable. good luck!

rite thank you...but i want to coordinate it with my college plans so does anytone know any information on this

I know that once you go to college, you can like miss three years? for millitary duty in a foreign country. Although I'm an American citizen, I enlisted for the Korean army and plan to join the army after my first year of college. I think what you should do is first go to college, and then go to the Israeli millitary, but again, I'm not really sure about other cases.

I also know that you can take about 12 months off before joining your college which means you can spend about an year in the millitary before attending the college as a Freshman. But I did not really hear about anyone deferring for more than an year. Anyways, I think you made a very honorable decision. But you must also know that once you go to the millitary, you forget alot about academics. That is why many Korean college students try their hardest to avoid joining the millitary when studying abroad. So what most of them do is get a sense of the college for an year as a Freshman, and then, join the millitary for two years. That way, they have enough time when they come back from the millitary to adjust and meet friends that they have made during freshman year.

Yes, many colleges will allow you to defer your enrollment. Check with your college to see how long you can defer it for. I know Yale is two years, Stanford is one, others probably the same.

Good luck with that. There was an incident in the ROK army where this guy went berserk because of severe hazing and threw a grenade at the people that were in his barracks or whatever. Then he shot dead his officer, blew up the building itself and ran away. Well guess what the families of the soldiers that died get? About $100k. I'm like WHAT? "Thank you for serving our country. BTW your son died. Here's $100k." HUH? I also hear that hazing is common, accepted and even encouraged. Harassment is also accepted. They treat you like crap, pay you $50/month, and make no compensation for any opportunity cost lost. "It's an obligation" What-ever. Just telling you what I've read. I just think you lost your sanity....why ANYONE would VOLUNTEER to go there, I will never know. I'd rather disown my family than go there. If they want me to go, I would only go in a bodybag. I would take cyanide before I get there. I'm not putting my career, life, education, and everything else on hold for 2+ years to be treated like crap, be fed crap, be housed in crap, and to be physically abused, mentally abused, harassed (both personally AND sexually), and hazed, and get $50/month for it. I'm worth that PER HOUR. Anyway they treat the people that are supposed to protect the country like crap, they feed them crap, they pay them crap, and they take away their lives for 2+ years, and give you no time to do anything but get yelled at, hazed, harassed, and physically abused. And what's the compensation for your valuable time? $50 per month. (you can make that PER HOUR tutoring English in Korea) OK factor in housing, food, clothing, whatever, it still doesn't even come CLOSE to minimum wage. (It can't be worth more than $300/month) And the ROK government wonders why the hell nobody wants to enlist (and why everyone's hiding overseas so they don't have to serve). I DO NOT understand how they can't see that obviously if you treat people well, they want to work for you and if you treat people like crap, nobody will work for you. They treat people like crap and expect people to want to work for them. Well that's crap.

OK. End rant.

OP,
Although I find it admirable that you want to serve, I personally believe you have a responsibility to your country of citizenship first.

I personally believe that I don't have a responsibility to any country.

I don't owe anything to anyone. Period. Case closed.

If you don't have to do it why would anyone join the military, especially a foreign one? I'm a bit lost.

Yeah I was wondering about that...why ANYONE would VOLUNTEER to join the military, especially the Isreali military, is beyond me. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Isreal but they're in the middle of a friggin' war.

That's horrible, guys. Some people want to join the military to fight for what they believe in. Some people have strong convictions and want to make a difference in the world. Try to be a little more open-minded.

OP - A lot of schools will let you defer enrollment for 2 years for going into the military, but I'm not sure if it applies to foreign militaries. If you explain to your school why you want to do it, it will show that you are passionate, and they will probably say okay. Check with the specific schools you are applying to.

Bravo for wanting to, and having the conviction to, help people. I don't agree with the war (or any war) but I admire you.

"why ANYONE would VOLUNTEER to join the military, especially the Isreali military, is beyond me"

thats the stupidest statement that i have read in a while. just because you are a coward doesnt mean others are.
and to all of those saying that he shouldnt join and questioning why he is joining, he's not asking your opinions about whether he should join or not so shut your mouth. why do you have to put down someone who is willing to give their life for others. it just shows how ignorant and selfish you are.

good luck with the israeli army, defend israel against those terrorists with honor

"no its not odd at all...i am a jew and i have a responsibility to the jewish nation.."

I didn't really mean offense. But it does make more sense now that I know you're Jewish.

anyway, I know our military reserves the right to reinstate active service for up to 8 years, does isreal do something similiar? if you're facing possibly serving a second time, i'd definitely call the colleges for their policies on the subject.

I wonder how not wanting to join a military makes me a coward.

I'm against the idea of killing someone just because they are the "enemy" and they wear a different flag on their clothes. Why should I? I don't have anything against them.

Military action is silly, childish and pointless. It doesn't accomplish anything. Isreal and Palestine have been fighting over the same strip of land for the past like, 30-50 years. What have they accomplished? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. They're still fighting over the land.

thats all nice and pretty but maybe one day youll realize that military action is a necessary evil in the world. not all of it is justified, but it's there
