define: "brief essay"

<p>For John Hopkins' supplement to to common application, it says to write a "brief essay" about why you choose your major. </p>

<p>"2. Write a brief essay in which you respond to the following question.
(freshman applicants only): Johns Hopkins offers 49 majors across the schools of Arts and Sciences and Engineering. on this supplement, we ask you to identify one or two that you might like to pursue here. Why did you choose the way you did? If you are undecided, why didn't you choose? (If any past courses or academic experiences influenced your decision, you may include them in your essay.)"</p>

<p>So what exactly is brief? Some colleges have regular essay lengths set at 500 words, some at 2 pages. what exactly would be brief in comparison that would be safe either way?</p>

<p>after all, we are talking about a "brief essay" and not a "brief statement."</p>

<p>I would guess that 250-300 words should be fine, but if you're really worried, give the admissions office a call - I'm sure they get asked that a lot!</p>
