Hey y’all! I need some advice on whether a science degree is worth pursuing. I’m currently a first semester freshman general business major, but I’m having second thoughts about business. It sees boring and kind of mainstream. I’ve been thinking about changing to a science major (like chemistry, biology, etc.), mainly because I’m doing alright in chemistry with a really high B. So i’m just wondering if any science majors out there could give their insight on this. Pros and cons about a science degree would definitely help too
I hope others can chime in here with more specific advice, but I think it depends on your career goals. A degree in biology or chemistry is really hard, but broad, so the career outlook without a graduate degree can be fairly limited. Someone here may have better input into Chem specifically.
@rymose I cannot speak to the job field in science right now, but I would say if you find a class that interests you look into it more, maybe try some similar classes and see if it’s a field that will interest you.
This is a degree that could guide your next 40-50 years, so if business is not interesting you like you had expected, try some other options. The first 2 years are general classes so you can get a variety of courses and change your mind.
Personally, I had majored in business even though it did not interest me because my parents pushed that it was a “responsibile degree” ( when I also really wanted to pursue chemistry).
Whatever you end up with, best of luck! It’s still early and you have lots of time to find a field you are passionate about
My son is accepted to liberal arts/ Econ, 3.9WGPA 1450 SAT. Second guessing on not applying to Smeal. Can you transfer in or does Econ offer similar advantages to SMEAL. Thoughts?
