Degree Dilemma: Is a Mechanical Eng. Minor Worth Pursuing?

I’m a 2nd year Microelectronics student at RIT; a degree thats the only of it’s kind in the bachelors MicroE in the U.S. This is to say its relatively easy to find a job and do R&D in leading fields.

However, my interest has always been wide-spread, I’m really interested in space, aerospace and military development where much of the work I want to do there is done by mechanical engineers. I really want to prove that I have solid mechanical work as well (switched from mechanical recently too), though my major’s coursework is very hands-on and intensive so pursuing a double major is a death wish.

Could a minor in ME possibly benefit me in the future? Or a couple mechanical’ focused classes in aerospace help me? What about mechatronics? Any way I could land a far-future mechanical-based job without a full ME?

If you have the extra space available in your curriculum and you don’t compromise your graduation date or your academic performance, it seems fine to take some ME courses. Whether you have enough flexibility to take a minor will depend on your academic situation and the requirements at RIT.
