Demography

I was born in Hawaii and currently live there, along with my parents and my older sister. My sister was born there as well, along with my mother and all her siblings, who also grew up there and still live there. My grandfather moved there when he was young, and his second wife (my step-grandmother, though she’s been in the family since my mother was a teenager) is a Hawaiian blood native.

On the common app under the Demographic section, it says “Regardless of your answer to the prior question, please indicate how you identify yourself. (Select one or more)” and then it lists:
American Indian or Alaska Native
Asian
Black or African American
Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander
White

I checked White with the sub section being from Europe, but would I be allowed to check Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander with the sub section being from Hawaii, because I am? Or would that be incorrect because I’m not Hawaiian blood? I know that, since this is an ethnicity question, I can technically check anything I want because it is how I identify myself, but I don’t want to get in trouble for checking Native Hawaiian if there’s a risk that I could get in trouble for not being blood Hawaiian.

You are not “Native Hawaiian.” The “native” in this context does not mean that you are from there – like I’m a native Floridian – but whether you have Hawaiian bloodlines. I would just go with White. They will see elsewhere on the application that you are a resident of Hawaii.
