"Demonstrated Interest" - should you expect a reply?

I often read here about showing interest, writing, chats, etc. Should you expect a reply though?

My daughter (HS junior) attended an info. session/tour in the fall. Upon coming home she wrote a very nice email to the admissions person who hosted the session. Said she loved what she saw and was very interested. Didn't get a reply. No big deal - I wasn't sure she would get a reply to that, but my daughter wanted to send it anyway.

A couple of months ago she went on the website and filled out the "request info." form. She hasn't received anything. Actually, she did this for 5 schools and only one sent anything. And this was just a postcard.

Last week she signed up on HC's website for the 2/22 on-line chat. A few days later she realized that she will be at language school in Costa Rica and will not be able to participate.

She sent an email to someone in admissions explaining that she signed up but why she won't be able to make it. she wanted it to be known that her missing the chat was in no way a lack of interest - on the contrary she will be visiting again in the spring and will apply in the fall. Haven't gotten a reply to that message either.

As I said, i'm always reading that schools take notice of communication and interest - do they really? Is there another kind of interest they are looking for?

I wouldn’t get too worked up about it. Holy Cross makes note of emails (they say) and chats, etc. but it isn’t that if you do 2 and someone else does 3, you have a disadvantage. : ) When you fill out their app or supplement, don’t remember which, it has a question about visiting, communication with school. My daughters put a tour, partly self since we were late, and 2 chats, one was general, one was about FA. They didn’t interview.
Sometimes it takes time to get things, some schools mail info around the same time and keep a list of names. They want to make sure everything is up to date. Some will send you things forever just because of a form you filled out for information on their site.

HC does like interest, some schools can care less. Some strong students who want a school that would be more of a match or financial safety, show strong interest so the college doesn’t think they are using them as a safety which is good.

I know for HC, emails, chats, visits, interview, all show them that you like them enough to take the time to do it.

After my son visited Holy Cross last year, I felt like we constantyl received mailings and emails from them. Nothing personalized, but lots of mailings.
