Does your school receive information that your parent has been denied a Parent PLUS loan? What information is shared with the school? Can I now get more aid?

You now qualify for about $4k in more student loans.

How much money do you need?

Tell your school that your parents were denied a Plus Loan. The school either knows that or can find out.

I am a senior. My father has been recently relieved of any responsibility through the courts. I will not be able to get private loans nor will my mom. Any suggestions?

How much more are you looking for? Taking $9500 in Stafford loans for one year is a lot, imho…

Yes. it is alot and guess what, the courts here in New Jersey have already ordered me to take out almost $20K (stafford loans). Here children are expected to take out loans so if I want to attend college the Court makes me first take out loans.
State college here cost about $13K in tuition and fees - another $12K if you don’t live at home (not everyone’s home is close to a state college).

Taking out $20k in Stafford loans ($5k per year) is not a lot.

sk8rmom was referrring to “per year” …not total.

You’re not being asked to take out $20k per year by the court. The max loans for stafford are…

5500 frosh
6500 soph
7500 jr
7500 sr

and add about 4k per year with a denied Parent Plus loan…so about $43k total…which is a lot.

A student can start at a community college to save money for the first 2 years. Do you live by a state school? If so, then commute. Going away to college is a LUXURY.

What is your EFC? If it’s 0, then you get 5500 in a Pell Grant. Also, if your mom’s income is low, you’d get some NJ aid.

mom2collegekids - Child is a senior. For three years they were ordered by the NJ courts to take out the maximum loan amount if they wanted to go to college.
Mother has helped the best she can as she is disabled, unable to work and there are two other kids in college, who were also ordered to take out loans.
Dad is a partner at a large law firm with offices throughout the world. Annual income is in excess of $550K.
skr8mom said $9500 for one year is alot, most of which is unsubsidized.

Only $3500 of your first year loan is subsidized. The balance is unsubsidized

My mom didn’t even bother applying for a PLUS loan for me because she has the worst credit in the world. However, my school realized this and switched the PLUS loan on my financial aid package with a PERKINS federal loan which is about the same amount. I don’t know if this will happen to you, it’s just what happened to me when we couldn’t get a PLUS loan. Also, my EFC is 0 so that may have helped for me qualifying for a Perkins loan.
