Denied for parent Plus loan. What now?

So, my mom just applied for a parent plus loan and was denied (we expected this lol). I’ve read posts on CC from experienced members saying that if you get denied for a plus loan, you’ll get an additional $4,000 federal loan. What do I fill out to get the $4,000 loan? After my mom was denied, the studentloan.gov website mentioned nothing about an additional $4,000 loan.

Do you need that much extra loan? Have you any other options that would make your education possible without the extra loan?

Talk to your FA office.

“Do you need that much extra loan?”
-Yes

“Have you any other options that would make your education possible without the extra loan?”
-Nope. I need the extra loan

You just go through your FA office.

Is this for the OOS school in Cleveland where you were gapped $15k/year? You can borrow the $5500/year federal student loan on your own. Since your mom can’t pay anything and was turned down for the PLUS loan, I think you can borrow an extra $4k/year, but I don’t know who you’d be borrowing from. Where’s the extra $5k+/year coming from? Maybe you should consider a gap year and look into the nursing program at the TX cc near your home.

sigh
Can we just disregard that post I made months ago. It’s not relevant to my situation anymore.
@austinmshauri I’m not doing nursing anymore, I’m doing accounting.The nearest community college is 40 minutes away and I have no transportation. With loans, I’m left with $5,000 for the year. The college offers a payment plan where you have to pay for each semester in 4 installments, which comes out to $625 a month. My mom can afford that. No need for any private loans (thank goodness)

If you can avoid the private loans, that’s great. Contact your school’s financial aid office to ask how to arrange for the additional $4k loan. They should be able to help.

Okay, I’ll do that. Well, tomorrow I’ll check the financial aid section of my student profile to see if the loan show up. If not, I’ll take everyone’s advice and just call the financial aid people.

I’m not sure the school even gets notice that your mother wasn’t approved. I’m pretty sure you have to call them and tell them about it and ask for the extra amount on your loan.

The only thing the college website says about being denied for a plus loan is this:

-Parent may choose to obtain an endorser and complete PLUS Counseling;
-Appeal the credit decision by providing the U.S. Department of Education with documentation of extenuating circumstances and complete PLUS Counseling;
-Not to pursue a Direct PLUS Loan at this time, which allows eligible students to receive up to $4,000 or $5,000 in an “additional” Unsubsidized loan depending upon the student’s grade level
-Indicate a response of Undecided, which will prompt the school to take no further action on the Direct PLUS Request nor award the student “additional” Unsub.

So, I’ll just call the financial aid office tomorrow

Great update to my situation: I was awarded an additional $4,000 scholarship from the university! Which means that I only need to pay $1,400 for the year ($700 each semester). Life is pretty great right now :slight_smile:

Great news. Have they offered you a work-study to cover that remainder?

I got offered $4,000 in work study. With the work study money, my mom just wants me to put it in the bank and use it for whatever I want

Note that work study money needs to be earned. You need to find the eligible job opening and you need to have time to fill that work schedule to earn the full amount.

^Yeah, I’m aware. There are a lot of FWS jobs on campus

@GreenTeaFanatic , give it like one week and it will show as an updated fafsa award, it will says extra 2,000 for fall and extra 2,000 for spring due to parent plus loan denial.

also i have done this myself before, the FA office will know just give them a week. You can call if you want but you won’t need to not for atleast a week. Its an extra 4k from the stafford loan so your school is knows your parent was denied because they have to fill out a portion of the application for the loan.

@raulhumber2 Oh, it actually showed up today as “Direct Unsubsidized Loan 2nd App”.

@GreenTeaFanatic yup see, i personally preferred my mom getting denied so it wouldnt be on her credit or her name. And the extra 4k i took covered the final gap of my expense so i was pretty happy, sophmore year i saved up and didnt need it, trying to stay away from loans in general.
