Hey everyone...I just wanted to make a general thread for 2015 Denison hopefuls. I'm an RD applicant from Ohio, and Denison's at the top of my list right now. Anyone else? Where are you from, how do you feel about Denison, etc? :)

D applied to Denison. Visited in the fall and loved the campus. Met the Admission Director when he came to her school in Wisconsin and she thought he was great! Looking forward to hearing from them soon!

Daughter visited last fall and really liked the campus and the quality of the facilities and people she met. She applied and was accepted early action to a couple of liberal arts colleges in midwest but decided Denison was her number one choice so she applied early decision and was accepted with a very attractive financial aid package. We live in Oregon which is a long distance and a plane change but that didnt matter to her. We are all excited and pleased with her choice and look forward to the fall.

Congratulations to your daughter!
I thought the city of Granville was perfect, like a movie set - ie Truman with Jim Carrey.

Final …I’ve often said same. The kind of place that parents and alumni love a whole lot more than undergrads …lol. A gran place to go back to, indeed, the way a “college town” is supposed to look and be like. As might be expected, Granville’s daily time clock and amenities (Whit’s and the local grill/bar on the corner being major exceptions)are not always in sink w/ student bio-clocks! Some of the most beautiful churches in America, too.

Ruddy Duck - Can I ask what your daughter’s stats were and what her scholarship was too? My son liked the school very much too. Thank you.

Jersey 17 Glad your son is interested. The good news is I believe Denison has a strong endowment and provides greater aid than many schools can offer and their finanacial aid stats confirm that. I also think they are interested in having a diverse and balanced class and are not ruled by strict numbers or stats as evidenced by the fact they went test optional like other progressive schools like Bowdoin, Lawrence etc. Good luck and hope the admissions process goes well

as the Duck notes and outsiders confirm, DU’s strategy of purchasing student stars to enhance and transform both perception and reality is ongoing. Essentially they’ve determined to “buy” strong students who they perceive as academically stronger than the U has historically attracted, and students who will contribute to a campus community created by the 4 year residency requirement. And as a consequence, DU has been the lone LAC tier 1 school listed among the top 10 institutions “giving the most aid to the most students,” for each of the past 4 or 5 seasons.

So many of these lists are smoke and mirrors, perception, etc. This one’s based on numbers and percentages of students receiving dollars and proportions of cost. So while undoubtedly not the perfect assessment …it’s hard numbers and not merely what peer presidents or provosts “think” of a place.

And another number worthy of note is that endowment. Like all it’s suffered under the recent economic downturn, despite recent recovery. And it’s far better having funded financial aid than unfunded.

So DU is far from perfect from my pov, but it would be even further from perfection if net payments were more painful, and value was diminished.

S applied RD and also applied for the Paschal Carter Scholarship (NMF). We live in northern VA. Denison is high on his list, but he will not be able to attend without the scholarship. I was looking at their website today and it looks like notification for admission is mid-March :).

yes, and they seem to religiously adhere to the announced schedule. good luck w/ the scholarship.

jkiwmom, I’m in the same situation…I can afford Denison only if I get a Carter scholarship (and even then it’s not for sure). Fingers crossed for all of us! I do wonder how many applicants there are…and I wonder if notification about the scholarship will come at the same time as the admission decision. The packet just said “March.”

My daughter’s scholarship notification came in the same letter as the notification of admission.

Zetesis, recently or in past years? I am guessing you mean a year or two ago :)

In 09 my son’s admission letter and scholarship notification were in the same large envelop;pretty much right when they said it would come. I remember well how exciting that was. He is a Denison sophomore who is pretty pleased with his decision to attend. Denison has been by and large, a supportive as well as academically challenging place to be. Good luck to you in this stressful waiting stage!

Yes, exactly – I meant when she got her acceptance 2 years ago, the notification of her scholarship came in the same envelope as her acceptance.

@ Summerstorm --good luck to you too! It would be so nice to get good news in 4 weeks (happy to hear that the scholarship notification comes with the acceptance letter). My S is planning on majoring in Fine Art and another concentration (tbd…psych, english…so many options ;). Like everything I’ve heard about the Fine arts/visual arts dept.

Our D is thinking about Denison and she is a swimmer. Can anyone tell me if the athletic tip is helpful in the admissions process there or if not?

Not sure about the “pull” or push of any of the athletic coaches, but if there is one who can get it done? Your fine daughter is in THE CORRECT SPORT! Congrats. Word of caution … as you’ve already discovered, swimming demands a massive commitment of time, energy, personal investment. At DU, that is multiplied, and promises to be magnified with the men’s NCAA championship this season. The women have been just as strong for just as long. My point? Admission to DU is the tip of the iceberg. She’ll need to be a strong student, no matter the “tip” or advantage. It’s not MIT, but neither is it Buckeye Bob’s Truck Driving Institute! Go get 'em. It’s a fine, worthy place, and swimmers are among the Big Red athletic elite. And that’s a far cry from being an Ohio State running back. Still, it ain’t bad. Good luck for finding a right place. It’s a fun few lengths.
