Hi, all. I was recently accepted into both of these programs as a transfer student. Which should I attend? Looking for candor and impartiality. Any intimate knowledge from students at either of these conservatories or parents of students at either would be greatly appreciated...provided any happen to stumble upon this post. Thanks a lot.

You should re-post this on the Theater/Drama Major forum for a better response.

MommaJ, this is the theater-drama forum! If it were me, I would go to Depaul because of the reputation, courses, and location as well as showcases in LA, NYC, and CHI.

CalArts is located at a considerable distance from points of interest in LA; DePaul is located in a vibrant Chicago neighborhood, and readily accessible to all points via public transportation. Of course, the weather’s better in Valencia, CA, than it is in Chicago.

DePaul would be my vote.

cpeck13, I swear I’m not countering spitefully or with any intention to belittle your opinion, but: Doesn’t CalArts have a pretty fantastic reputation? It’s on a number of “Top 10 BFA Acting Programs” lists and they have a very attractive list of alumni. Also, its course offerings aren’t too far off from DePaul’s, though there seems to be more of a focus on movement at CalArts. As for location, it’s right outside of Los Angeles. And as for showcases, though there aren’t showcase opportunities offered in Chicago, they do hold showcases in Los Angeles and New York City. You offer up good points about DePaul and I completely agree with all of them. I’m convinced that it’s a great school, but not yet convinced that it holds more merit than CalArts.

…not trying to be abrasive. Honestly.

followinit, no worries! Everyone is entitled to their opinions :)

Their both on equal level quality wise, but they are very different schools. Both are very nurturing, but CALARTS focuses more on creation of art in general, as well as acting. Do you want to go to a school with only art students and collaborate on projects all the time? Or do you want to have more diversity with a larger university?
