DePauw University vs Mount Holyoke College?

Hello. :) I would like to know what you think of these two institutions in terms of education quality, social life and housing. I am an international student from Georgia and I am planning to major in political science and philosophy.

(Received quite similar financial aid packages.)

Thank you in advance for your help.

I would choose Mount Holyoke. More studious, better location, 5-college consortium, amazing alumna network.

I would probably opt for Mount Holyoke as well, as long as you’re OK with going to a women’s college. The campus is really beautiful and you have access to classes throughout the 5-college consortium which is a huge plus. It has a really solid reputation and history as one of the “Seven Sisters.”

par72 is missing an opportunity! Mount Holyoke will be fine for those majors. You might even come away liking Americans or America. Lots of people are going to want to talk to you when you get to campus :)]

Thank you for your replies. Another thing: MHC accepted me for spring term (starting January 15). Do you think this would be a hindrance or a big disadvantage?

It may mean just a bit slower integration socially, but I’m sure it will even out the following year. I would do it for the better college experience.

P.S. do you know what the term ‘ninny’ means in English?

@brownparent , haha, yes, I do. To my knowledge, it is a shortened form for nincompoop, meaning a foolish person.

My excuse is that I was quite young when I created this username without knowing the actual meaning of the word.

Did MHC offer a “bridge” program for the Fall?

DePauw is a small school where most of the students join fraternities and sororities. Unless you would like your social life to be sorority-centered, it may not be a particularly good choice. Mount Holyoke has a better academic reputation anyway.

@MYOS1634 , I don’t think so. It doesn’t say in the letter. What is the bridge program?

I just meant a semester program where they enroll you to bridge the time between graduation and Spring; sometimes you enroll in an extension program, sometimes you go abroad…
You could use the free semester to travel, to work, to lean scrapbooking :p

@MYOS1634 , oh I see. No, they didn’t offer me anything of that sort. However, if I do decide on MHC, I will probably take APs and amass some funds for my studies.
