Yes Another One (NEU vs MHC)

Hi Parents,

I posed this on college search but I figured I'd ask all of you for advice too. At this point I am trying to decide between Northeasern and Mount Holyoke. It's quite difficult to compare them because they are such different schools, so any insight would be very appreciated.

I'd like to major in journalism, and I think the coop program and internships in Boston would be very helpful. I would also really love to be in Boston, so so much more than South Hadley (though I live in a small town now so I could theoretically deal with it). That said, Northeastern is kind of big and impersonal for my taste and I'm not particularly into the party scene. It seems like the people/community at Mt Holyoke would be a bit more me (though even a little smaller than I'd like maybe...). Also wondering about elitism at either school? And of course MHC supposedly gives a better education. I guess those are the main things. I'm visiting both schools this month, so hopefully that will help. They're each giving me about the same amount of money. Thanks.

Usually I would not encourage one to choose a school just based on reputation, but this is a striking case. Mount Holyoke is a legendary school and still enjoys a tremendous reputation--the first women's college, a long tradition of excellence, and so on. It has first-class faculty and incredible alumni loyalty and networking opportunites. Unless you feel a real need for an urban or on-premise coed environment, I think MHC is a clear-cut choice.

I guess one thing I'm wondering is is the reputation really that much more superior? It does seem like it should be obvious there, and yet somehow it isn't. Thanks a lot for your advice, but does anyone else have anything to add? Thanks.

Yes, it really is that much superior.
