Depositing to multiple colleges?

So last year, I heard of someone who deposited to two colleges asking them both to reserve a spot for him. He then decided which one to attend in May and withdrew his reservation from one of the two.

Is this allowed? Don't those who were wait-listed go ahead and deposit to a school to which they were accepted and, if they get off another school's wait-list, withdraw their deposit from the original school?

Thus my question is: is it possible to go ahead and ask two schools to reserve spots for me and then decide later in May which one I would like to attend (by withdrawing from one of them)? I feel like one month (now one week) isn't nearly enough time to decide, and I have two colleges between which I'm really split.

Thanks for the input.

No, you can’t do this without express permission. They can both revoke you. A month should honestly be plenty and you’ve had a lot longer to think about schools. Decisions can be tough but it’s time to make one.

If you need more than a month to decide between two schools, you’d be perfectly happy at either of them. Don’t risk getting in trouble so that you have more time to decide what THE perfect school is.
