I know I want to go to UNC, so I want to pay my deposits as soon as possible, but I also applied to two other schools whose decisions don't come out until April 1 and I am curious about my acceptance to those schools (plus I would have wasted 100+ dollars on application fees). Is it unethical to pay my deposits (both tuition and housing) while I wait for those decisions?

Not really unethical, but is it really necessary? Unless UNC wasn't your first choice, and you're still seriously considering those two other schools (and waiting to see how much they offer you in financial aid), then I would personally lay off the deposit until I saw the letters from those schools.

You aren't making sense to me... you know you want to go to UNC but you want to wait to see about other schools?

Yeah, I know I want to go to UNC, but I still want to know if I got into the other schools. What I am asking is, do I have to cancel my other applications if I put in a deposit?

If you know you're going to UNC, it is polite (for lack of a better word) to cancel your other applications. It would be kind of unfair for you to possibly take someone else's spot at another school that you know you don't want to go to.

I wouldn't cancel any applications if you've finished them. Perhaps you will get an offer that you would not have forseen that will change your mind. You also may find yourself wondering later on if you would have gotten in. I don't think you're actually taking people's spots because not only do colleges plan on never having a 100% yield, but they have waitlists for a reason.

Oh I get what you're saying now. I wouldn't withdraw them if you don't want to, worst case someone gets in off the wait list as cloying said so you aren't really taking anyones place.
