Depressing weather?

I've been checking out the webcam Live view - AXIS 223M Network Camera the last few days and don't think I've seen the sun shine once. Just wondering if there are any CA residents on the forum that could share their feelings about the overcast weather. Is this just a fall/winter seasonal thing or pretty much year round?

Thanks....

I'm not from CA, but I do live in Eugene. I once saw a list that put Eugene in the top 10 places in the US with the most overcast. If you're worried about fog, that only really comes around in the winter. And it doesn't really rain that much here either. Most of it only happens in the winter and at night. The good thing about the overcast is that you don't really need sunblock:D

Thanks. There's actually been some sunshine the last 2 days. My son says he likes cloudy days but coming from an area where it is almost always sunny with no clouds he may be in for a shock!

My daughter from Pennsylvania is a freshman at UO and loves the weather so far. Even though it rains she says it is not an unpleasant rain. (? ) When she was home for Christmas we had some rainy days and she said it was so dreary..which surprised me. She said Eugene weather was nicer even when it rains. I'm just happy that she's so happy LOL
A big advantage to the rain is that the campus is absolutely beautiful and green!!

I love how green the campus is, but I'm also concerned about the rain...I really hate the rain, and I'm from California where it's always sunny. In fact, it was sunny today! Any comments?

No two ways about it, it is rainy in western OR and if you really don't think you will be able to hang with the rain you should reconsider attending. Some people are very susceptable to weather related depression and if you think you may be one of them maybe take a closer look at schools further south.

I lived in Eugene for 7 years before moving to California and the weather most certainly IS depressing. You can go months without even seeing the sun and the rain is enough to make any enthusiast dread the drench. I didn’t realize how much I missed the warm sun until coming back to California. If you decide to go to U of O know what you are getting yourself into, they even have light therapy for the depression onset by the dreary days.

I grew up in southern CA and found the weather incredibly depressing. It just depends on what you like, what you’re wired for, or something like that. Only when I moved to San Francisco for college did I realize how much I prefer less sunny areas. Now I live in southern Oregon, which is still way too sunny for my tastes, but at least the winters are nice. I wish I had a summer place in northern Canada!

Someone told me this is reverse Seasonal Affective Disorder. I want to find somewhere that has fog therapy for depression onset by relentless sun. ;)

I grew up in Syracuse, NY…probably at LEAST as overcast as Eugene and a LOT colder but as a kid it was no big deal. When I moved to So Cal I was depressed for 3 years. Every day was the same! But i got over it : ) Now I live on the central coast and the weather is perfect for me. My son says he likes overcast and rainy weather…I’m not sure how he’d like if for months at a time. We are going up next friday for Duck Days. Supposed to be raining. Hope he gets a better feel of what he’d be getting himself into if he went to U of O.
On a side note every time we mention U of O people seem to have a friend or relative from here going to school up there and they all love it. Guess the weather isn’t too bad for them.

Yeah, I hear this weekend is going to be rainy. Fortunately or unfortunately, according to one’s perspective, we’ve been way down on rain this season. Eugene normally has over 5 in. of rain by this point in the calendar year, but 2009 has seen less than 2.

So, your weekend will give your son a preview of wet Oregon weather, but this year that’s partly just the bad luck of this particular weekend.

Although I do enjoy rain and clouds, it is nicer to tour colleges in the sun. I remember when my son and I toured Tufts. It was pouring! They handed out complimentary rain ponchos to everyone. At Lewis & Clark they had these very nice large umbrellas you could borrow.

When my older son toured MIT it was pouring. He changed his mind then (plus he didn’t get in) He’s at UCLA now…pretty much perfect weather for him.

so we are planning to fly into Portland and drive down. It’s about a 2 hour drive right?

Yes it is. As someone who traveled to Eugene from Portland the first time I visited UO I will forewarn you that it is not a “pretty” trip. It’s a pretty boring straight drive and not terribly scenic, but don’t let that put you off. Oregon is a beautiful state with a lot to offer, but that particular route does not give that impression!

While you are on campus, you can go to the library and get a map with a “Tree Tour” (you might be able to get that at admissions as well? ) . You can take a nice walking tour of campus with information about many of the different species growing there. It was a fun way to spend a little time exploring for us…we loved all of the trees on campus!

There is a little place right across from the bookstore where I enjoy eating lunch outside.
We ate there when we toured and it gave my daughter a good opportunity to people watch while we ate since many students go that route.

And be careful making right hand turns…lots of cyclists on the road.
Hope you have a wonderful trip!

Thanks for all the great advice! I kind of wish we were going later in the year so the trees would have leaves on them. Oh well…

It’s okay, there are many gorgeous evergreens on campus too. Perhaps if your son ends up attending UO you’ll drive up sometime to visit him. If you’re driving up from the south (that’s the way I get there) it’s a spectacularly pretty drive.

Are you in Ashland 'rentof2?

This is totally true, it’s just a bunch of farmland. You can see a lot of hawks though when you get closer to Eugene.

What makes it even worse (if you’re driving) is that almost all of them never wear helmets.

Oh and I just remembered this about U of O. If your kid likes chamber music, U of O has a little theater that is supposed to have better acoustics than the Hult Center’s symphony hall.

Looking at the webcam today and it’s a beautiful day at U of O. Looks like people really take advantage of nice weather up there. We kind of take it for granted here. It’s cool how people hang out on the lawn when it’s a nice day.

what’s the link for the webcam slodad?
