Describing one's goals or one's contribution to society?

Hi guys, I'm writing college essays right now and I would like some advice. Would it be better in a normal essay to describe your goals or how you can help others? I know some questions such as Georgia Tech's "Progress and Service" one should be one of the two, but for questions like "Describe why you want to come to the specific college or program," should I describe my future goals in that program or even preparation for a career or should I come off as a community member hoping to be great for the community?

I know this question may seem like there's only one answer (community) but I think that the colleges should really get a sense to know what I want to do, and I don't yet know how that will help society yet. But what's your opinion?

Do you mean goals vs. helping other college students, or goals vs. helping others in your career? IMO, questions like that are asking about your goals during and after college. But at the same time, most programs of study and career goals do impact society in some way, unless you just want a high salary and job security.
