Hello, yes, I realize I'm starting late in the came - person we thought would help with college essays, sorting out "ideal fit" schools, etc. fell through. We are ideally seeking someone who has a minimum of a Masters in Writing (or Literature), ideally with experience in helping edit essays, and knowledge of top tier (Ivy League and similar level colleges).

Does anyone know either a contact name or other contact infomation they can send me privately? (Please don't post any contact info publicly). Or are there accredited sites to go to in order to find legit members? (The sites I found seemed a little "off").

Lastly, what fees either as a package or hourly rate can I expect to pay for this sort of help? Thank you anyone.

College Confidential offers an advising service.
There are also two professional associations for independent college counselors: IECA (Independent Educational Consultants Association) and NACAC (National Association for College Admission Counseling).

Thank you fellow mom. I tried to look on the second site (found on web) but other than a message to the president, I only saw links for their members and no list or link at how a consumer (like me) could FIND or contact the members. :-(( Do you (or anyone) have a specific link or number I can try. (Yes, I tried to send an email to the president, but as yet, have not received any sort of response).

How do I find or contact the College Confidential service? Thanks!!

Even if posters are from states other than mine, how are YOU going about finding a consultant? I saw that in just a few hours, over 200 people viewed my post, but only one replied. That tells me there is interest in my question, even if no concrete answers.

Any English teachers or professors or grad students on this site who can work with me remotely (ie: email, Skype, etc.) even if not in the same state? Please send me a private inbox message with your background and fees. Thanks.

On the NACAC website, go to the “parents and students” tab, then scroll down the page to the blue box in the bottom right corner that says “search for an independent counselor”. You can search by state, and it looks like there are 29 independent counselors who are NACAC members in New Jersey.

To Siliconvalleymom, thank you very much! I can usually navigate sites, but for some reason I didn’t see how to access that blue box until you explained. Thanks for the help!!

Happy to help!

I can’t figure out how to contact the CC professional advisors. I remember that the CC homepage used to list fee-based services, including a waitlist advising service. I am not seeing those links anymore…is that no longer available?

This is just my two cents: usually students writing their essays need help with grammar, or editing and not content. Sometimes a high school english teacher will offer their assistance if approached nicely.

Also, if you have not gone to a “College Fair”, I would do that as well. I know that the fair might seem overwhelming, but by meeting recruiters in person, you might get a better idea about the colleges “fit”. I really believe that visits are important to gauging that “fit” as well.

Are you just starting the college search? Perhaps, you still have time to do some of this research yourself since you know your child best.
