Private College Counselor

Since everyone here is so invested in the college application process, does anyone here actually have a private college counselor? I do

So I guess at this point we need to ask who? Tell us all about this......I mean geez you got it all wrapped up.

I live in a very upscale, competitive town, and for both of my sons we did NOT. And they were both accepted at their first choices. I am aware of only one family in town that did.

I did use a private college counselor.. still waiting on decisions so we will see how useful he was.... but I was somewhat pleased with his help.

I do. raises hand

But I pay absolutely nothing.

Best of both worlds, I say!

How does that work? Or can we find out on this forum???

How does what work?

Private college counselor for not fee. Or are you playing semantic games with us?

No, seriously. I don't pay anything. The company that works with me does 'pro bono' work. You can probably find a college counselor that is willing to do pro bono work. Just express interest, write to them, explain your financial situation, etc. That's what I did. If you have a lot of money but just don't want to pay, don't bother. Either you're rich and pay full-freight, or you're poor and pay nothing. There's no middle ground of where you have the money and don't want to pay.

and you are applying this admissions cycle? Any results yet?

I am a junior. I've just started, so I can't tell you right now how useful it is. I don't think good students necessarily need college counselors. Most of the ones with counselors already are great students. I wouldn't worry about it -- I didn't. I just sent in an application and didn't expect anything back. I'm supposed to be having a meeting sometime soon, so yeah.

Clearly you are applying in the next admission cycle. Unless you have open applications right now.......you apply next cycle. I am not worried I am almost done with college but thanks anyway.

What do these guys do anway? Or women. W/e

I meant that I sent in an application to be considered for pro-bono work. Hazmat, please, stop jumping to conclusions. It's really irritating. I'm a junior, and no, I have not worked on any COLLEGE applications. However, I did have to complete an application for my COLLEGE COUNSELOR. She requested one because they need to figure out what I need to work on for my applications in the next admissions cycle.

College counselors assist you in the college admissions process. They can help you with your essays (as in, read them, not write them for you), help you complete your applications, how to best organize your activities, prepare you for interviews, suggest summer programs and/or activities that might interest you, etc. They are there to help you get into the schools that you want, however, their success rate is not 100%.

I can read........but I cannot follow your narrative. Have at it dooder and enjoy the show. Your poor articulation doesn't make me annoying.

Just so you know, hazmat, you're not making any sense. Murky was pretty clear.

I guess its reasons like this the cycle of poverty for the poor exist for generations...

Can we please get back to the point please? I am also curious who on this forum used/is using a private college counselor. And whether it was worthwhile. And how much it cost. I've heard of some outrageous fees and I'm wondering if they're true.

The guidance counselor for my sons (same person for both kids) says, "Why would anyone pay all that money when we do it for FREE!?"

"The guidance counselor for my sons (same person for both kids) says, "Why would anyone pay all that money when we do it for FREE!?""

Well my HS counselor was hardly any help because it was her first year working as a counselor and she really didn't know what to do...there was a point where I believed my counselor recs wouldn't reach my colleges on time because she decided to take an extended vacation in december...

guidance counselors are crap compared to these private counselors... guidance counselors don't really care and don't really spend any time crafting your applciation (essays, activities, interviewing, etc)... They have hundreds of students to see, why should they care that much about you?
