Hi everyone. I am taking the ACT in February and I am starting to get stressed out studying for the Science Reasoning test. I have gone over many different strategies from the Princeton Review, McGraw Hill, and the official ACT book. The highest score I have gotten on a practice test so far is 18. I usually end up with about 3 passages left, which I have to put random guesses in. I know this is terrible. I have such a problem with the time limit! Does anybody have any tips or trade secrets for me? This is the last chance I have at improving my Science score. Please help. It's so odd because on the Reading practice tests I consistently am scoring in the 30s.

My son took the ACT twice, 36 both times on the science portion (32 composite, and a 26 one time in math, 29 the other). He said don’t over-think it - it’s all about reading the graphs etc, NOT the science. He also swears by the w ebs ite number 2 dot com

If that is really your nemesis, why don’t you try taking the SAT instead? It has no science section…

Do not read it. Really, skip straight to the questions and use the graphs to answer. Only skim the passages as a last resort. Time feels really limited on this section so you need to get really good at reading graphs. Get used to the different kinds, and try to determine the overall nature of the experiment within the first few seconds of seeing the pages. Also, try working through the section one time without a timer. Take as much time as you need to reason everything out and see how you do. Then you will be able to build your speed.

The only time you should EVER read the passage in the science section is if it is the one about the two scientists arguing. The questions in those passage are reading intensive, so you can’t skip straight to the questions. Other than that, just jump straight to the questions.

Thanks for the replies. Can someone offer me insight on how to better pace myself, but still get correct answers? I feel like when I rush through, I make needless mistakes.

My son took the ACT and did well on the Science. There is a you tube you can search on ACT science section that gives great pointers on how to take and complete the science section.

Do you know the website?

Try [ACT Test Prep - Science - YouTube](<a href=“ACT Test Prep - Science - YouTube”>ACT Test Prep - Science - YouTube) or search youtube ACTscience

Thanks! Looking at it now.

My only tip is DO NOT READ THE PARAGRAPHS in the problem that involves GRAPH. Seriously, it’s a waste of time to read all of the info. Answers the questions about the graph first, which always take less time, and save the reading for last. The first time I took the test, I ran out of time and randomly guessed on 8 questions ( those required reading), but still mannaged to get a 26.

Good luck with that!

in your case, i think sometimes your fear can overcome your true ability. I’m a immigrant with terrible English, with some practices I bump my science score from 13 to 25. How about tryin to relax yourself and come back when u feel confident. good luck!
