Hi all, I am a freshman at Saint Mary's College in South Bend Indiana. Originally from the Los Angeles area, I entered Saint Mary's with the common intention of wanting to transfer into the University of Notre Dame. Now one semester in, I am certain that I am going to transfer out of Saint Marys. I have tailored my schedule to satisfy Notre Dame's transfer requirements; however, I am now having second thoughts about transferring into ND. While I still plan on applying, I am also now very interested in attending USC and LMU for either journalism, communications-both of which Notre Dame does not offer. I am not particularly homesick so I am not looking as USC and LMU for those reasons.

Anyways, my dilemma is this-I am having a lot of difficulty settling on a major. Consequently, I am also struggling with selecting schools to transfer to- USC and LMU are not exactly a multitude of options. I came into college very undecided on my major, toying with the idea of premed, prelaw, psychology. I have become fairly certain that I will major in english for its widespread practicality in the field of liberal arts and hope to obtain one of the above as well. Does this sound reasonable? Have any of you been in a similar situation? Any relative feedback is GREATLY appreciated!!!

Finding the major you really love is hard.
You have to give it time. It'll come to you eventually but at the same tiem you have to be proactive.

Think about what you like doing. Think about what you're good at.

thanks krnpsychopath...its easier said than done, especially when so many college freshman seem to have chosen their path in what seems like overnight. but i appreciate it.

okay so NEW question- could someone guess my chances at getting into either USC or ND with these facts about my record?

My overall high school gpa was a 4.1 weighted. I took nearly every AP and honors courses offered at my school. I founded the Habitat for Humanity club at my school, which since its founding has built over 5 houses and schoolhouses in Mexico. I was the top-ranked female mountain bike racer in my age group in 2004 in the nation. I was a four-year member(fresh-sr yr) of Key Club, a general community service club. Have volunteered for the past 4 years at a summer camp for mentally challenged children.

In terms of my brief college transcript, I have a 3.8 from first semester. I continue to work with Habitat, this time in the fundraising aspect. I was the chair for a first annual large Christmas fundraising event. I tutor local high school students and serve as Habitat liaison for my school...

Chances of transfer admission to ND? USC? LMU?

The key to getting into any of these colleges is taking the required courses.

All of these colleges have things called "articulation agreements" with different colleges (including St. Mary's). You need to go to each college's website and find out what courses they require--and what courses at your school will meet these requirements.

For example, at USC, you cannot be accepted unless you complete a professional writing class by the end of your sophomore year. If you don't know this--and therefore don't take the equivalent course at St. Mary's, you have zero chance at admission to USC.

Here's the articulation website for USC:

Good luck.
