DESPERATION...................as in READ THIS AND RESPOND!!!!!

The scores might seem in range for CMU as a whole. But if you see statistics for CIT(I am assuming CIT since SCS is even more difficult). They are below the middle 50% even in Math. For people studying in the Indian System SAT Math is a breeze and thats for those who score ~80% in math he apprently scores way more than that. I'm sorry but his SATs paint a totally different picture of his academic potential.

Another thing, Who the HELL predicts 96%? Fewer than 50 people all over get 96% in the board exams.

seE I MADE A VERY BIG MISTAKE,I TOOK THE EXAM AT THE WRONG TIME
I TOOK THEM AT THE END OF CLASS 11 ,AND I AM FEELING REALLY BAD ABOUT IT .THATS THE WHOLE REASON.I KNOW IT IS A BREEZE FOR INDIAN STUDENTS,AND I AM FEELING REALLY BAD ABOUT IT.I HOPE ADMSSION OFFICERS REALIZE I TOOK IT REALLY REALLY EARLY ,BUT HOW DID YOU GET STASTICS FOR MIDDLE 50% IN SAT 2'S

I think Laksya M is right. Universities like CMU that have separate schools often have very different SAT ranges among the schools. Sometimes particular majors are waaay of from the norm. If you are applying to a program within a school that is far more competitive than the school as a whole, you need to to look at the numbers for the program, not the college. I think CMU does have breakdowns of SAT scores by schools somewhere on its website. And I do believe that CIT's averages, make it a stretch for you score wise. But you can apply to more than one school at CMU with one app. If you are set on going there, apply to the Humanities &SS school and/or the Mellon School of Sciences where the test scores are not as competive. You can take the intro engineering classes without a hitch, and if you do well on the core course and the intro engineering classes, you can transfer to CIT. Not easily done, I hear, because doing well in those courses is not easy. If you want to be sure that you are in an engineering program from the get go, you should look at any number of schools where the test scores are not as high on average. All of these schools offer outstanding programs for engineers, and that is one field where your undergrad school is not going to be a big deal in getting a job. THere tends to be a great deal of consistency in the material covered among the different college programs. Stevens Inst, RPI, RIT, Kettering, Drexel, Rose Hulman, Clarkson and any number of schools including state schools have engineering as a major.

@kARTHIKSMART: Taking the test at the end of 11th grade is no excuse. A LOT of people take the SAT at the end of 11(I did too!). Even if you think that there was something wrong and that you think you could've done better. Why didn't you retake? You certainly had the time.

All I'm saying is that you might be able to convince yourself with these excuses but the colleges aren't going to be convinced. I don't have the statistics for middle 50% in SAT 2's but this link might help:
http://my.cmu.edu/site/admission/menuitem.edce48707aab43c019300710d4a02008/

For SAT II, the average(Shown on CB's site) in Math II is 644. You've got a 660. So you're just about at the average.

You have already applied, and if you hadn't I would've suggested that you do. But don't bank on getting in. You might get in and you might not. But you're clearly not a shoe-in. Keep good safties in hand.

Another thing to remember is that for internationals SAT Math is even more important. Doing well in it is crucial.

Well I'll distance myself from what's going on earlier in this thread, I'll just say that typing normally and posting isn't that hard.

At any rate, I'd recommend that you retake Math II, more than the SAT Math score, which can be attributed to a few unintentional mistakes or sheer fatigue due to the SAT's length (both excuses in reality, but understandable ones...), however with the number of mistakes allowed in the Math II exam, your score lets you down.

A friend of mine got in ED to CMU earlier this month, his SATs were quite good, 2000/1900 I think, 710 ish on SAT Math II, so it's definitely possible to get in, just not assured.

I WILL TELL YOU WHY I DINT RETAKE IT.
I KEPT MAKING MISTAKE AFTER MISTAKE ..sorry caps not intentional
I got selected to represent my country ,and because of this my october ,and november dates were fully occupied. Why i dint retake it in december ,i dont know.i feel like kicking myself .i have already registered for the jan test ,in case carnegie rejects me .If carnegie does accept me , since i have applied ED ,there will be no problem .I spoke to Brown and MIT ,and they said they will accept my jan SAT scores .THere is no way i am going to apply to Brown or MIt with those subject scores.
I hope to do a LOT better ,in the Jan SAT .
i tried figuring out why i dint do well the first time around, maybe my concepts were weak, but my school exams and IIT coaching class exams said otherwise.
Thats why i was confident of doing well and thats why i took it a little early .
BIG MISTAKE
i hope it doesnt costs me
I was aware that my SAT 2 scores were nothign to boast about , and thats why i applied early decision, hoping that they would increase my chances of getting accepted
Can anyone tell me how long it takes for a letter to reach india from the US ?i am yet to recieve my admission id no ,in the application reciept letter.
it was despatched on the 7th of dec .

KATHIKSMART:well...the mails usually take around 10 days to reach.......
btw, best wishes for ur jan. SAT...

What does that mean? Some other-worldy force forcing you to type in capitals??

oh ..the reason my first two sentences are in capitals are because my password is in capitals . hence the keyboard conifguration is not changed.i start typing away and when i look up,i see them in capitals.then i change it

that's... very believable

Wo! This Thread Is Rockin'!!!

note :this is perosnal ,others might not share my opinion(since that line allows you to probably post just about anything you feel like ,and either the Mod chose to ignore that post by badman ,or hasnt seen it )

actually since i'm really nice, i'll tell YOU, kARTHIKSMART, what made people turn against you in this thread.

First, you say
this is hereby a solemn declaration that i am in desperate need fo help!!!

this IS NOT A CHANCES THREAD
which made us all think you've run into some really deep trouble. and then at the end you said
will this just be a nuetral point or a huge negative ????
will the throw away my app jus bcos of this?
Without even going into what you said in-between, this last statement is a "PLEASE RATE MY CHANCES" declaration.

and then, going into what you said in-between, we see that you're an excellent applicant. then we see that
my ecs go on and on

WIllany of this help?
i mean is CArnegie that choosy?
which i'm sure ticks some people off (not me though). but i'd say the worst thing you said was
MY SATS are not GOOD.........in fact miserable
SAT 1
math-700
verbal-660
sat 2
math 2-660
chem-680
and
MY TOEFL SCORE IS 280/300-GUD ENUF?
Do you have any idea how many people are so willing to trade those scores with you? Do you know how many people struggled like crap and still can't get those scores? DO you know how many people could only wish for scores like that? And here you are complaining and whining that your scores aren't good. You sound like a conceited Ivy League person.

Lots of us here aren't that gifted to be able to get such scores, and some of us who do are overjoyed. and what you essentially did was to belittle those people, saying "it's not a big deal because it's a miserable scores." How do you think that made others feel?

To lend weight to what i jsut said, here's a quote from a fellow CCer:

And then your horrible typing. We gave you advice to change your typing to reflect the fact that you're a brilliant student about to go to college. but you mocked us, saying "i like typing this way and no one is gonna tell me anything else."

alot of us wants to help. forget me for a moment. badman89, who called you a "conceited person" towards the end, was trying to be helpful too. and then Lakshya M?

do you know why? it's because by mocking our advice about your typing, you essentially come across as a stubborn and proud person, which not many CCers like. coupled with the fact that you just called your SAT scores 'miserable', it's easy to see why many turn against you towards the end.

we are a community of helpful and nice people (most of us anyway). but the no. 1 rule in CC is: be nice to people if you want them to be nice to you.

YES i said my SAt's were miserable because i honestly truly thought they are.How am i supposed to know they were good? many of my classmates got better scores ,and i thought i was bad.You probably dint read the post where i said i will learn to type better.and i have improved
no doubt i made mistakes, but bad typing is not a crime.now where did i say i will type the way i do and all of you have to read.you have got it all wrong.
yes ,i have said a few wrong things but they were purely unintentional.now that i do know, things i am sure will improve.

Hahah, dude( kARTHIKSMART) do you come from India? ^^^

you probably do, cause ur calling those scores "miserable".

Let me tell you something, (not to take a dig at you, just explaining), I got a 1720 on the sat.

So dont call those scores miserable, I know you probably wud compare it with ur freinds, but before calling it miserable check the averages out.
It may have been unintentional, but it seems you are seriously insulting those people who got lower scores than you.

Finally, I hope you get into your first choice uni!

thanx a lot dda!!
yes i probably should have checked the averages out, before making off handed remarks.I AM SORRY I OFFENDED ALL THOSE PEOPLE BY CALLING MY SATS LOW,BUT PLEASE BEAR WITH ME AS IT WAS COMPLETELY UNINTENTIONAL.I AM NOT CONICIETED AS I SERIOUSLY HONESTLY THOUGHT THAT THEY WERE LOW ,WHEN I COMPARED MY SCORES WITH MY FRIENDS

Hahah no problem dude, have fun applying ! ( I heard its a nightmare from India, and although I've never lived there being an Indian myself, I fully hope you get into whereever u apply)

Karthiksmart - this is the vibe I get from you:

You posted your stats and you clearly stated that this is not a chances thread.
Then, you typed this:
only one last thing i want to know..are my chances more than even? or less??..pleaseeeeeee
And it's not only this thread. The one in the college admissions called carnegie carnegie carnegie blah blah
You stated that it's not a chances thread but you kept asking throughout the whole thread, things along the lines of, "what are my chances"

But I'm not saying that's negative or anything. Just stating a contradiction.

However this kinda ticks me off:
You seem to waive off all the helpful criticism offered by cc'ers. ie when one person said that your math score was pretty low, you crapped your pants about how you took it after class 11 or something - it's like, your making all these excuses and you seem like you DONT want ANY criticism.

Instead, you're probably feeling all high and gloated since people have been saying that your SAT scores are above average, and your ECs are wonderful (I said that in the earlier post too).
You remind me of one of my friends that frames herself as pathetic and likes to recieve all the "no, you're not bad at this. stop putting yourself down. you are great!" compliments.

I'm sorry and correct me if I'm wrong but that's just the vibe I'm getting from you...
Nevertheless, good luck. the decision for EA (you applied EA right?) comes out on Dec 30? Or is it Jan 15?

I APOLOGISED RIGHT?

so what are you trying to do by starting another rage?
of course i am completely aware that while my SAt's are not top notch, they are just above average.that is nothing to bloat about.I APOLOGISED RIGHT?
Anyway the decison come out jan 15th and thanks for the positive reinforcement!!
